Lakers, Luka Doncic agree to massive three-year max contract extension

The Los Angeles Lakers and superstar guard Luka Doncic have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension, which includes a player option in 2028.

Luka Doncic has officially been paid. Early Saturday afternoon, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar guard agreed to a three-year max contract extension with the team.

NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN was first to report the news.

According to Shams, Doncic signed a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the franchise. The deal includes a player option in 2028.

Doncic released a statement after the news was announced.

"I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud," he shared in a statement on X.

"Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning."

Doncic was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers on February 2, 2025, alongside Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The trade turned the NBA world on its head.

And now, Doncic is in L.A. to stay for the foreseeable future.

Last season, Doncic played in 28 games with the Lakers, averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game. It's clear that the team is now heavily invested in building a future around Doncic, while LeBron James' future in Los Angeles remains up in the air.
