The NBA is a business, and it can be a ruthless one. No superstar in 2025 knows that better than Luka Doncic. Despite spending six and a half successful seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, the 5-time All-Star found himself abruptly traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in February.

The move hurt Luka, who cried courtside on his return to Dallas in April, but that did not stop him from dropping 45 points on his former team. And while this offseason has been all about proving to the league why Dallas made a mistake, Doncic recently revealed that he still feels 'weird' about not being a Maverick.

“I didn’t know how to react, how to act, what to say,” Doncic told the Wall Street Journal. “It was a lot of shock. I felt Dallas was my home. I had many friends there. The fans always supported me. I didn’t want to upset Dallas fans. And I didn’t want to upset Laker fans.

“Everyone was talking about it. Even now, they still talk about it. I think it will always be strange. I don’t know if someday I will have closure or not. For sure, it will always be weird.”

Doncic's words make it seem like he could one day find himself back in Dallas, but a lot of time would have to pass, and the organization would have to change significantly for that to happen. For now, the 2025-26 season is a month away, and there is an MVP and a championship to be won in Los Angeles.
