Silas Redd Transfers From Penn State to USC
Silas Redd, the Penn State running back who led the team with 1,188 yards last season, is transferring to USC. He will be eligible to play immediately for the Trojans. USC coach Lane Kiffin put the full-court press on Redd over the weekend, and Trojans’ backup QB Matt Wittek even put in a call to Redd. The two used to play Pop Warner football together.
USC had an immediate need at the running back position. Amir Carlisle unexpectedly transferred in January, Dillon Baxter was dismissed from the team, and Tre Madden, who was switched to the position in the spring because of depth concerns, tore his ACL. They have three players at running back entering the season. The addition of Redd – the guess here is he wins the starting job – probably gives USC the best offense of any title contender in the country.
With Penn State losing its best offensive player and perhaps its backup QB, it is a feeding frenzy in Happy Valley right now. If this keeps up, the Nittany Lions will be a road apple in the Big Ten this year, especially for Wisconsin, which appears to be a lock for the conference title game.

I hope he has an awesome year and then gets drafted by the Bengals. That will show his front-running ass.
/Or not really, he’d still be a millionaire

Meh, good for him. I’d rather go to Cali for 1 semester, get some ladies, take no classes, and go pro the day the season ends too. Truly heroic thing that NCAA did for these kids.

USC averaged 35.8 points a game last season with Matt Barkley at QB.
LSU averaged 35.7 points a game last season without a QB.
With LSU having essentially the same O back, only having added a QB in the interim, I disagree with your assessment.

The way this photo is cropped, the look on his face, the team he played for… forget it.

Whatever happened to Dylan Baxter? Thought he was supposed to be the next great RB out of USC.

Not often I go this route but this is a time where the eye test is probably sufficient…also USC averaged 100 more yards of offense per game, you’re counting a lot of defensive/special teams scores in that scoring average

Whats funny is since he became a free agent he’s suddenly become a lot better than he actually is. I mean I like the guy, nice player, but he’s no superstar. All his yards came against the dog shit teams on the schedule.

Had him on my fantasy team. He’s good, but not great. Would be a nice guy to have on any team but probably not a true game-changer. I seem to remember him being frequently substituted for when inside the 10.

Not exactly. Since USC is under scholarship restrictions and they’re maxed out, they have to pull a kid’s scholly to give one to Redd.
/Penn State football culture is out of control.

not really this either. Bolden was given permission to talk to other teams before the sanctions came down. Redd and a back-up former walk-on safety have left.

I wonder if Mark Emmert has any sense of irony.

Unequivocally no.

From ESPN.com: “The school needs a spot for Redd, but USC believes at least one player currently on scholarship is academically ineligible.”
Recreational Studies Office: Hello?
Kiffin: Uh, hi…this is Lane Kiffin. Remember last month when I called and had you change that grade to a C? Yeah, I was wrong. It was an F. Thanks. Bye.

road apple
Nice, Lisk. I haven’t heard/read that one in ages.

This is very true. I jumped on PSU’s under in wins back in June (6). Counting my payday already.

First year in awhile where I’m hoping Notre Dame beats Southern Cal.

I think Kiffin’s wife is a beard and he is offering her up to recruits for commitments

Spicious/Rex already hit on the big topic. I have no issue with any of the PSU players electing to leave, but it’s absolutely ludicrous that USC is picking this kid up.
They have consistently provided extra benefits, used ineligible kids, been put on probation, etc. Now the fact that they essentially have to kick a kid off scholarship to make room for the transfer is the icing on the cake.
But don’t worry, PSU has the football culture problem.

I thought part of the sanctions against Penn State stipulated that the kids who transfer out of there don’t count against their new school’s total for the 1st year. Is that not true?

Deal.
July 31st, 2012 at 7:33 PM
smart move. good for him.
huge recruiting bust right there. USC has had a handful of misses on blue chip RB recruits in the recent years.
July 31st, 2012 at 7:38 PM
For “normal” schools (not currently under scholarship restriction like USC) this is true. They can exceed this year (go to 26/86) provided they reduce next year (24/84).
July 31st, 2012 at 7:44 PM
disgusting.
couldn’t agree more.

Ahh, I didn’t know that part

great. transfer from pedophile U. to Cheating U. The NCAA should be ashamed for letting USC get players after they cheated for a decade. Down with the NCAA.

To make a comment like that, I assume that you slept under a rock for the entire last football season and then just saw the total points per game scored. LSU had arguably the worst OFFENSE of any team in the BCS towards the end of last season. They had 8 yards, yes 8 YARDS, in the first half vs a Georgia team that Boise State beat the pants off of. Yes, LSU scored 41 points, but most of it was off of defense and special teams. LSU scored a lot of points vs Oregon, but their offense was still awful that game. Oregon had 4 costly turnovers, 3 by a true frosh in his first game, and LSU had a few special teams Touchdowns and some 15 yard scoring drives. Meanwhile, USC had one of the most dynamic passing attacks in college football history and is now adding a stud TB to the mix. While LSU might find weird ways to voodoo their points, to compare their offense to USC’s with an UNPROVEN QB is ludacris. How many points did LSU score in their last game of the season also? You know Silas Redd scored a TD vs Bama, right? Something LSU couldn’t do in 8 quarters
