Wisconsin Has Incredibly Easy Route to Big Ten Title Game Thanks to Penn State and Ohio State Scandals
Wisconsin will have a transition year in 2012. The Badgers have the fewest returning starters in the Big Ten, 10. The have lost six of their nine assistant coaches, most notably offensive coordinator Paul Chryst. They massive turnover could create some instability. Thanks to prominent scandals, though, it won’t matter in the slightest.
Neither Penn State nor Ohio State is eligible to win the Big Ten Leaders Division in 2012 due to NCAA punishments. This leaves Bret Bielema and the Badgers with just three division opponents with which to contend: Illinois, Purdue and Indiana. All three could be awful next season.
Illinois is the marquee opponent. This is a team that finished 6-6 last regular season because it lost its final six games in the conference. New coach Tim Beckman did not bring his MACtion offensive coordinator Matt Campbell. Purdue won seven games last year (four came against Middle Tennessee, Southeast Missouri State, Minnesota and Indiana). The Hoosiers should improve with 19 returning starters in a second-year under Kevin Wilson. They are trying to improve, however, from an 0-11 record against FBS teams. The three finished 51st, 70th and 107th in SRS last season. The last of the trio to finish above .500 in the Big Ten was Illinois in 2007.
Basically, if Wisconsin can finish .500 in the Big Ten, that should get them a crack at their third-straight Big Ten title and Rose Bowl trip. Looking beyond that, they have a soft non-conference schedule (Northern Iowa, at Oregon State, Utah State, UTEP) and avoid Michigan, Iowa and Northwestern on the Big Ten slate. If the Badgers can sweep Nebraska (away), Michigan State (home) and Ohio State (home), that title game might have far more riding on it.

Oops, sorry Duffy. Too many tabs open. This was supposed to be on the last post.

Some serious side boob action going on in that Bret Bielema pic

Now this post regarding the PSU fallout has some real logic to it.

I don’t disagree with your assertion on Bucky’s easy path. But, I will be fascinated to see how Wisconsin does without 67% of its staff from last year (and the last 7 years).
Is it telling that everyone left to be with Chryst? Is the HerpDerp as big a prick as he looks? It just seems that some of those assistants would have stayed to get promotions when Chryst and others left for Pitt.
And, tell me how lucky Chryst is now that Penn State doesn’t have PA locked up in recruiting every year. Pitt suddenly looks like a place kids in Western PA might like going to if they want to stay in state…

Chryst gets the pub from ESPN and the like, but Wisconsin goes nowhere without the offensive line, recruited and coached by Bob Bostad. Carimi, Zeitler, Thomas, Moffit, Konz. Eleven lineman total recognized as all Big Ten the past two years. What Chryst was able to do with the offense doesn’t happen if those recruits don’t pan out. Pretty incredible run since 2006.

It was an accident. I thought I was on the last post.

I’m going to be the homer here, totally ignore recent history and say I really hope Ole Man Boobs up there is thinking the same thing you are Duffy. Because of the coaching turnover at Illinois (and Wisky to a lesser extent) and generally suckitude in Bloomington, and the fact that the Purdue/UW game is in West Lafayette, Purdue has a legit shot at the title game too.

MSU beats Wisky in the B1G title game.
July 24th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Is Cathedral/Erie still shipping a bunch of prospects into the B1G?
July 24th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
I guess Sandusky couldn’t be a legend — they usually are famous, not infamous. So good work B1G, putting Penn (had typo Peen which is disturbingly appropriate) State in the right division.

July 24th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Pitt and Notre Dame need to go ahead and join the B1G already. Throw Pitt in Leaders and Notre Dame in Legends.
July 24th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
these are SEC times. please don’t continue to waste everyone’s time with this big ten nonsense.
July 24th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Sounds good to me.
July 24th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Would have made a lot more sense than the ACC. If I was a NCAAF fan, I’d have been pushing really hard for the NCAA to step in and make conferences that make sense themselves.
July 24th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Yours is coming!
July 24th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Any B1G team that has to play at a MAC school should automatically be ineligible.
July 24th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
So the Big10 isn’t very good?
July 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Are you kidding, its so good Penn State is going to fold up shop out of fear of hurting themselves.
/its terrible, absolutely terrible
July 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Illinois with a good coaching staff could be a problem since Zook really was getting good guys to go there (seem to recall them having an oddly high number of NFL picks for a team that barely made bowl games)
July 24th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Nope, but the SEC is

I trace the conference’s demise back to Urban Meyer…while he was at Florida.

I’m happy to keep the topic on how bad the Big10 sucks.

Phuck Philly. Preds match for Weber. Now to come up with $26 million in signing bonuses during a lockout.

best way to pass the summer months? become an East Carolina fan. i rarely, if ever, lose sleep over the comings and goings of our football program. I cheer like hell and love our team, but man do we flounder in mediocrity.

I’m almost certain he has the afternoon off and Duffy is indulging himself.
July 24th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
And that right soon.
July 24th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
If Weber is invested, I don’t think they take a big step back… they just need one of the young guys Ellis/Josi to take a step up. They have the depth, but still lack a scoring threat, with or without Suter.

Kinda similar for UVa. Except maybe not quite mediocrity.

as does the entire state of NC in football.

Afternoon off? He barely writes one post a day besides the Roundup these day.
July 24th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Purdue at +5000 on sportsbook to win the Big Ten. Luniz would probably put 5 on that. Michigan State at +400 is probably the best bet right now though.
