Penn State Transfers: Breaking Down the Top Freshmen and 2013 Recruits
Coaches are camped out in the parking lot trying to land Penn State players. Two Connecticut-based players, running back Silas Redd and linebacker Khairi Fortt seem to be the primary departure risks. Here is a look at Penn State’s freshmen with four years of eligibility left and 2013 recruits. They are some of Penn State’s most attractive players and players most essential to keep on board for the lean years.
Freshmen [Four Years Eligibility]
The 2012 class was weak, ripped apart by Urban Meyer and the Sandusky scandal, though some strong recruits from 2011 spent last year redshirting and have four years of eligibility remaining.
Angelo Mangiro [G - New Jersey] Mangiro was PSU’s top offensive recruit in 2011. Most services had him rated one of the top guards in the country. He redshirted last year and had been expected to step in and start this year at guard. His runner-up was Rutgers. Tweeted he plans to stay.
Anthony Zettel [DE - Michigan] He was Penn State’s top defensive recruit in 2011, and redshirted last season. Surprise recruit as most expected him to become a Wolverine. Zettel has not commented publicly though his high school coach claims he will stay.
Deion Barnes [DE - Pennsylvania] Barnes is a weakside defensive end, Rivals’ No. 6 DE in 2011. Redshirted last year. His only other official visit was to Georgia.
Donovan Smith [T - Maryland] One of the top offensive line recruits in 2011. Redshirted last year. Expected to start at left tackle. He was among the Penn State players who publicly vowed to stay.
Ryan Nowicki [T - Arizona] Three-star recruit in Class of 2011 who redshirted. Reports have him transferring, likely to Illinois. Washington was also under consideration.
Eugene Lewis [WR - Pennsylvania] He’s a 6’2″ wide receiver. He was Rivals’ No. 141 overall recruit for 2012. He was among the players who reaffirmed their commitments.
Jamil Pollard [DT - New Jersey] He’s 6’5″ 280-pounds. He was Rivals’ No. 20 ranked DT in the Class of 2012. He declined comment and has yet to reaffirm his commitment. Boston College was the other school heavily recruiting him.
Brian Gaia [OL - Maryland] He’s 6’5″ 285-pounds. He’s only a three-star recruit, but he’s a three-star Nick Saban inquired about on Monday.
Bill O’Brien had a strong class coming in for 2013. Those players may be the hardest to keep. Players have maintained their commitments now. February is a long way away. He already lost DT Greg Webb to North Carolina (Rivals’ No. 106 overall) and (Rivals No. 222 overall) CB Ross Douglas to Michigan.
Adam Breneman [TE - Pennsylvania] He’s a 6’5″ 228-pound tight end. Four-stars by three of the four recruiting services. Five from Scout. He’s Rivals’ No. 27 overall. Has already reaffirmed his commitment.
Dorian Johnson [OT - Pennsylvania] He’s a 6’6″ 280-pound offensive tackle, rated four-stars by three of the four recruiting services. 247 has him as a five-star and the No. 13 overall. He had offers from Alabama and Wisconsin. Consensus has him flipping to Pitt or West Virginia if he decommits.
Christian Hackenberg [QB - Virginia] He’s a 6’4″ 212-pound pro-style quarterback. Four-stars across the board. Loves Penn State. Plans to revisit the campus.
Garrett Sickels [DE - New Jersey] He’s a 6’4″ 245-pound defensive end, rated four-stars by every recruiting service. Rivals has him No. 60 overall. He should be staying.

It is a shame none of these guys will be the toast of the town for one week in December or January in their college careers.

If anyone has any changes I’ll update. Was hamstrung a bit by the twitter outage.

Come to U.Va. Our campus is undoubtedly nicer.

Or be eligible to win the Big Ten…
I think that is worse. I would think a lot of these guys go elsewhere, but as we’ve seen through all this, the pull of Penn St. is mighty.

seems like an appropriate time to revert back to the tried and trusted cold calling research method.

His H.S. coach was on the local news last night. Sounds like the fact the assistants that recruited him and now coach him are still around is a big reason he’s staying.

Aww, cute kid.

UVA is making a comeback. That and the ACC overall sucks at the game of football

This guy really does not give a fuck about bowl games does he?
Like parachuting out of a crashing airplane onto a sinking ship.

Angelo Mangiro is from New Jersey? Stunner.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Angelo Mangiro’s olive oil voice and guinea charm are intangibles that the star rating system just can’t account for.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
O’Brien looks a little like Randy Couture in that pic.

Mass Exodus.

How many players will Saban take, then revoke their scholarships for bullshit violations?
July 26th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Why would we be worried about who Penn State brings in? Aren’t they going to shut down the program so nobody gets hurt? I read that somewhere.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Saban’s just trying to get in that DC/Balto pipeline.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Aww, cute kid.
i think it might be a good idea to leave the kids out of the picture for a while – let things cool down a bit.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
I like Bill O’Brien and I hope/think he can weather the storm for a little bit, but sweet jesus that dimple.

He caught it from Tawmmy

Would love to see Joyner quickly schedule a 2-year away-away matchup in early Dec. with Hawaii. We could make our own “bowl” and least have something to sell to recruits in the next couple years.

SHIRT IT DURN?
July 26th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
I can say with certainty that for any of this class that make it to Senior Day in 4 years they will get their “toast of the town”. The alumni base will be forever grateful to whomever stays.

Why the fuck is Kansas City so special?

Is it really necessary for Brady Hoke to bring a bucket of chicken with him up to the podium for B1G Media Day?
July 26th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Kirk Ferentz will of course be making a phone call to Bill O’Brien before contacting any of these recruit because he’s Kirk Ferentz.
Use those PA connections, Kirk. Get a DL. I’m resigned to the fact that Silas Redd ain’t coming here because that would be stupid when he has way better suitors out there than Iowa.
/plus we have AIRBHG

I’m sure this has been written a lot in other places, but I think this whole scenario is going to backfire on the NCAA. How many times have we heard former players and fans mention that all the players that get Penn State through this period will be forever loved. If anything, the sanctions may prove to be a recruiting tool that Penn State can use to their advantage. These kids will be legends.
Does a 4-star recruit want to be another forgotten face at a football factory, or part of a saving a legendary program under a proven NFL coach?
I have no ties to the school, but as an outsider, it feels like the school is embracing football to get them through the scandal…….the same thing that probably caused the cover-up in the first place. If the NCAA wanted to cause real harm, they should have shut the thing down for 3-4 years.
I may be naive, but I think Penn State is in really good shape in 2017.

UVA is making a comeback.
From what? So they’ll win 7 games?
July 26th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Wait until he drop his pants, reveals an outline of the state of Ohio on his left cheek, and starts pointing to all of the places he’s taken recruits away from Urban.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Why the fuck is Kansas City so special?
Because I live here.
Don’t be too jealous. Google holds press conferences every couple months and nothing ever happens with this. This is as specific as they get.
Fun fact… they picked Kansas City, Kansas first. It is widely assumed they screwed up and meant Kansas City, Missouri as KCMO got added in later.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
It’s not taking away a recruit when OSU doesn’t offer that recruit.
July 26th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Haven’t seen this posted yet, so sorry if its Duckworth’d

should have stopped there
July 26th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Was? He’s on Montlake today and tomorrow yo.
July 26th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Maybe so. Regardless, the NCAA has forced Penn State to sell education and renewed integrity to prospects and their families. If you look at some of those quotes from recruits and their families, everybody seems to be saying the right things. I think this stuff coming from O’Brien will play a lot better than people are assuming.
