Blaine Gabbert: Torn Labrum. Jags Join Chiefs, Browns in Battle for 1st NFL Draft Pick
Blaine Gabbert has a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder according to ESPN’s Ed Werder. Dr. James Andrews – yes, that James Andrews – will take a look today and make the call on how the 2nd year QB should proceed.
One NFL player (Ed Reed) is currently playing through the injury; another, Chris Gamble, just had his season ended due to the injury.
Based on the early returns of Chad Henne’s performance against the Raiders, losing Gabbert – who is not exactly playing like an All-Pro – would be brutal for the 1-5 Jaguars, who have the NFL’s worst offense (league-low 88 points scored).
This sets up an interesting race for the No. 1 pick in the 2013 draft between the Browns, Chiefs, and Jaguars. All three probably are in need of a QB, even though Brandon Weeden has been improving in Cleveland, and Gabbert hasn’t played enough for the team to decide whether to dump him or not.
The bigger question: Who are the three teams targeting? West Virginia’s Geno Smith looked dynamite early, but has cooled off in recent weeks; USC’s Matt Barkley has done the opposite. Tyler Wilson has been hurt, Tyler Bray is not in the discussion, and Logan Thomas/EJ Manuel aren’t, either.
Clearly, there’s no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III in this draft.

Don’t count out the Lions. Would love to get the 2nd or 3rd pick then trade down. Get a LB, pass rusher and some CB’s in the first 2 rounds.

OH NO WHAT WILL JACKSONVILLE DO WITHOUT GABBERT?!
From terrible to terrible is more like it.

Blaine Gabbert has a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder according to ESPN’s Ed Werder.
From what I’ve seen, he didn’t have a throwing shoulder to begin with.
6 out 7 self links. Good hustle.

Blaine Gabbert: Torn Labrum.
Labrum really sounds like it’s part of a vagina, not part of a shoulder. But you do need it.

Man, if they still haven’t figured out that Gabbert isn’t the answer, they are in deep trouble.

Matt Barkley will be the number 1 pick. If the Browns get it. They should trade down and draft Mingo or Jones.

They still play football in Jacksonville?

And here I never thought the Packers would get a chance to avenge that embarrassing home loss to a Chad Henne team in 2010

and Gabbert hasn’t played enough for the team to decide whether to dump him or not.
the new salary scale for rookies makes this decision way, way easier. They only owe him backup money for the next two years. So they can dump him, and give him the bad backup money in cash, or they can keep him as a bad backup. But none of his remaining salary/cap hit forces them to keep him and play him, which is why the owners changed the salary rules in the first place.

browns aren’t drafting a qb if they get the 1st pick

Isn’t MJD hurt as well? Might as well hand Jacksonville the number one pick now so they can spend the next several months who to waste the pick on.

the upcoming draft is absolutely lousy with pass rushers, and all the QBs are questionable. So it might be a tackle who ends up going first.

D-tackle? Because I don’t see Luke Joeckle being a top 5 pick let alone number one. Perhaps Lotulelei.
October 23rd, 2012 at 10:35 AM
FB, Guard and MLB are the non draft need positions in Jacksonville.
October 23rd, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Browns aren’t getting the 1st pick, partly for the same reason they wouldn’t draft a qb if they did.
None of the college QBs should go first based on what we have seen so far. But if the Chiefs end up with the first pick I bet they take Barkley.

They’re bad, but they’re nowhere near #2 or #3 overall bad. Pick 10th and draft Milliner.
October 23rd, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Why does this site continue to think the Browns will take a QB first? They just drafted a QB last year in the first round and would essentially have given up after 1 season. If the Browns get the 1st pick, they will trade down and again get a few more 1st/2nd round picks for doing this. Which is you know a good thing.

Chip Kelly, bro.
October 23rd, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Though seriously, if they’re bringing in an entire new front office staff and coach, it’s not crazy to think they’ll gamble on a QB.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:06 AM
This QB class is just atrocious. Stay far, far away
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I can see that scenario happening but I don’t think it’ll be next season. Weeden has proven to be worthy of at least another season and the browns have more pressing issues at a variety of other positions.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Weeden has been very good if you take out his Week 1 performance. Browns are not going near a QB in this draft. Overall, the have a solid offensive nucleus. They need Defense.
Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Browns win a handful more games. They are very competitive right now and are progressing each week. Chiefs and Jags seem to be getting worse.

If Barkley goes in the top 5 it would be one of the biggest mistakes of the draft. For a guy that has two of the best 10 receivers in the country on his team he’s been pretty underwhelming. He’s immobile and terrible under duress.
Barkley this year against Syracuse, Hawaii and Colorado
65/88 856 yards 16 TDs 0 Ints
Against everyone else
75/145 917 yards 6 TD 6 INT
Good luck with that.

Mingo is going to play LB in the NFL. If you’re looking for a DL, I’d go with Montgomery.
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Take a shot at another USC qb? Good luck.

Weededn has been adaquate and improving. Drops in the Phily game cost them 10 points, 7 in the @BAL game and 7 in the @IND game – all which would have proved to be winning point. He has the most dropped passes in the NFL and it’s not like these are bad passes being dropped – the dropped stat is pretty pro-WR in terms of it being a drop.
