Let’s Say the Cleveland Browns Get the No. 1 Pick. Would Chip Kelly Leave Oregon for Cleveland?

Jimmy Haslam, the new owner of the Cleveland Browns, went on The Fan in Cleveland, and was asked, among other things, about the team’s 2012 1st round draft pick, Brandon Weeden. With a new owner, a soon-to-be new President, a likely new GM and new head coach … yeah, you can see where I’m going here:
Do you consider Brandon Weeden the quarterback of the future?:
“I think it’s to be determined, and I think Brandon understands that. He’s making good progress. I was really proud of him the other day. He got dinged up a little bit, came back in, completed 8 of 9 passes and made some clutch throws at clutch times. That’s what good quarterbacks do, they win the game at the end, and I thought Brandon played exceptionally well. … If you go back to the first game, he’s made marked improvement.”
Scenario: Cleveland fires coach Pat Shurmur. (That is expected.) The Browns finish 2-14 or 3-13 and end up with the No. 1 pick in the April draft. The Oregon Ducks defeat the Alabama Crimson Tide (or Notre Dame!) to win the National title.
Do the Browns go after the hottest coach in College Football who hasn’t given the NFL a shot yet?
Last January, Chip Kelly came very close to leaving Oregon for the Tampa Bay Bucs. Unless something changed in nine months, Kelly’s buyout is only $3.75 million, which is paltry compared to others who haven’t had his success in recent years.
What are the chances Kelly would bolt for the Cleveland Browns, where he could handpick the QB he wants – Geno Smith? – to run his exciting offense? Before you ask how said offense might translate to the pros, well, Kelly met with Bill Belichick in the offseason, and the results so far this year have been positive for Patriots.

Your do this college coach to NFL thing every year.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
No.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Seems like a lateral move, no?
October 17th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
i’d rather a sharp stick in the eye than chip kelly or geno smith.

The idea of Notre Dame playing for the title made me almost puke. It’s an actual possibility and it is making me sick. I really hope they lose to anybody right now.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Stop it now.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
I really don’t think Shurmur is – to steal a soccer term – a Lame Duck. IND, SAN, OAK, KC, WAS along with some more divisional games – two at home. About one month too early.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
How much does Kelly make per year? You’d be surprised how beloved he is in Oregon. They think he’s the best thing ever and that includes Phil Knight thinking he’s the best thing ever.

I don’t know which would be better, the immediate gratification of watching them lose now, or the immense gratification of watching them get embarrassed in the NC game.

Yeah, it never happens, KC …
Schiano, Spurrier, Saban, Petrino, Harbaugh, Carroll, etc, etc
Yeah, but the scenario you laid out is so hypothetical. First off, the Chiefs are going to have the first pick in the draft. Why would it matter who they defeated in the title game?
October 17th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
The Browns should hire Eric Mangini, he was doing a decent job polishing a turd before getting canned

October 17th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
geno smith isn’t chip kelly’s kind of QB anyways. if youre looking for a QB who’s used to running an insanely high tempo offense…why would you replace weeden with geno smith? weeden played in the same offense at a similar level and is already in the league. smith is awesome, but no way is he a legitimate upgrade…holgorsen’s offense is making him look way better than he is.

lol…said the same thing yesterday. that’d be a great idea.
mangini was doing AWESOME here…so holmgren replaces him with a guy with absolutely no business being an OC let alone a head coach because of cronyism. what mangini did with THAT roster was borderline coach of the year shit.

October 17th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised if Kelly tried to make his offense work at the NFL level, but I would be surprised if he tried it in Cleveland. My guess is he would want to go to a warm weather or dome team. It’s not going to happen any time in the next 5 years, or probably every under Elway, but it you’re going to try the super uptempo no huddle offense, Denver would be a great place to try.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:04 PM

Ok, makes sense.
Ok, you lost me.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
honestly, i think weeden’s pretty legit too. he’s starting to figure it out and his WR’s are getting better. how good his arm is really can’t be understated. it’s not that it’s just strong, but he’s accurate all over the place. id put it right there with flacco and stafford’s…still think vick’s the king of huge throw tho.

October 17th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Pat Shurmur to Maryland.
All I know is that the shuffling will end up with Chris Petersen at Mississippi State.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
This is pretty much what I was thinking. While some components of the spread offense works at NFL level, a full on spread offense would not work enough to justify the beating your QB would take. Besides Haslam/Banner will go after an assistant coach over some “Name”. Guys like Ray Horton, Mike Zimmer or Perry Fewell.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
weeden just needs to learn to read a defense, but he’s way better handling pressure than he was even a month ago.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
yeah I am in no way advocating that Shurmur is that good or bad. 27 players are first or 2nd year. If the team wins 5 games or so and clearly improves, not sure if that’s really a reason to pull the trigger on a move and having to rebuild your team. If Banner wants to hire his own guy that is in play of course.
Hiring Gruden would be the only obvious move out there.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Maryland fires coach Randy Edsell. (That is expected.)
It’s expected here on this site. I don’t think it’s expected by Maryland boosters or fans.

i am not just advocating, i am telling you that shurmur is FUCKING HORRIBLE. do you remember mangini’s two years? seeing any flags on the browns was a rarity…last two years with shurmur, they’ve gotta be averaging 10+ a game. hell, joe thomas has to been flagged for at least five this year alone.
how many penalties have killed drives or led to opponents getting great field position this year? every fucking game man. that’s all coaching…so if he’s not preaching discipline, he’s obviously not teaching strategy either, considering his just putrid offense and playcalling.

If I am Cleveland, drafting a QB in the first round AGAIN. They have so many other needs that this would be dumb. Give Weeden another chance and build something around him.
As far as coaches go, I don’t ever understand why every team seems to go after a guy who already failed at being an NFL coach first before looking at some younger coordinator.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
got it. we’re good.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Ok, you lost me.
Isn’t Denver one of the top cities in the US in terms of days of sunshine every year? Anyway, even granting you that Denver is obviously not a “warm weather” city, the altitude gives you an advantage that other “cold weather” cities like Cleveland, Chicago, Green Bay etc, don’t have. Like I said in my post, it’s not happening anyway because John Elway wouldn’t want anything to do with the spread, and he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

seeing any flags on the browns was a rarity…last two years with shurmur, they’ve gotta be averaging 10+ a game. hell, joe thomas has to been flagged for at least five this year alone.
The roster under Mangini, actually had one of the highest average ages and most experience in games played. They also had 2x the practice time allowed under the old CBA. Some of the practice time restrictions have been called “The Mangini Rules” b/c his practices were so long.
Shurmur has by any metric, one of the youngest three teams in the league and that youth is being played, not hidden on the bench like Mangini’s picks of Veikune, Robiskie et al.
Also, Joe Thomas has a pulled hammy and a rib injury that’s not reported right now.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:18 PM

I feel like with Richardson, the Browns should get a defensive minded coach. I wonder if Rex Ryan would be available…
October 17th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
I think Denver would be a place for the alleged spread experiment as the altitude would play to the strengths or the fast-paced offense. Also, not happening there for a while anyway.

There is some sort of national perception that Denver is 1)At such an altitude life is intolerable and B) that it is some sort of icebox. The weather is very pleasant there. And, I think the sunniest day thing is true.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
It’s the influence from Quebec.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Browns need LB’s, Safeties, and Guards (well, and WR’s who can catch too).
I don’t get the Weeden hate. He’s playing like a rookie. He’s had 3 average to better than average games, 1 horrific game, and 2 bad ones. And he’s playing with Captain Butterfinger (Little), the most worthless FB in the league (Marecic) and a bunch of other unproven WR’s.
I think he’s the guy to build around. They have very good bones on defense, including a soon-to-be (when Taylor comes back) defensive line, but are missing some outside guys to help them out.
Shurmur looks to be terrible with the on the field decisions. However, the team is starting to get better. They have 30 1st or 2nd year players, so they were going to be a work in progress.
And shoot me if it’s Chip Kelly. That shit won’t play in Cleveland with the cold weather and the wind on the lake in November and December. It’s ball control and defense that wins in those elements.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:22 PM

Cleveland has had most success when the passing offense has worked. Otto Graham. Sipe. Kosar. People tend to think that it’s a power running city due to Jim Brown/Leroy Kelly stuff, but when you have an offense that can perform in that envirionment, that’s when they’ve done the best.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
fuck. Even if he could play LB, I wouldn’t want in brown and orange. I want him cut, now. He should be dead to Cleveland football. God, that guy is the worst player in the entire league.

James Michal Johnson and DQwell Jackson are two starters going forward. Robertson probably has the other spot dialed in with Acho in reserve. I dont think they need to touch LB.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
This argument could also be made for Jim Mora the Elder in New Orleans.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
With Bernie was Byner and Mack. With Sipe was Pruitt and Pruitt. Graham had Marion Motley, plus it was a different brand of football.
There can’t be a spread happy, timing passing game in Cleveland. It is similar to Pittsburgh. You can throw, but you better be able to run it or the offense can disappear when its most needed in December and January.

Otto Graham.
I interviewed him and Dante Lavelli a long time ago. Before Otto’s memory went. He played in the NBA equivalent as well. He was the starting QB on the all NFL 75th anniversary team back when the guys from the 50′s to 70′s were more known.

I’d agree. People just get to the OSU Woody Hayes 3 yards and a cloud of dust mentality for Cleveland lakefront football and its not really applicable at all though.
That said, the Lindsay Infante led offense, Kosar and co. would run some comeback timing patterns that were insanely coreographed.

I’m not sure why they continue to hire coaches who think they can be a coordinator (it doesn’t work), or who needs to be the GM. Butch was a fantastic on the field coach, but his moronic personnel decisions just destroyed a team that was nearly ready to get back on its feet.

This is insanity. Have you guys watched the Oregon offense much. There is a ton of lateral movement in that offense, to take advantage of the biggest market inefficiency in college football, speed. The Ducks do what they do because they can get that speed on the perimeter where it overmatches nearly every defense it comes into contact with, unless those defenses have NFL caliber defensive players (big and fast), then that offense doesn’t do nearly as much. Watch what happened to them when they played Auburn two years ago, or USC last year. But in the NFL every defense is big and fast. The running backs and quarterbacks in that system would be murdered in the NFL.

I’m suprised some college coach hasnt sold some WR/CB guys on being 2-way players in college to keep their speed on the field more to defuse some of this spread stuff.

No, that was “No. 1 prick.”

Don’t think anyone is saying Kelly would take the league by storm. Just speculating about if he would jump and where. Also some Browns fans are reminiscing about the not quite as bad ole days

How this conversation is occuring without a mention of the virtual trade of Joe Banner for Tom Heckert perplexes me? Yes, lets get rid of the guy who might have put the best 2 drafts in new Browns history for the asshole accountant who everyone in Philly hated. Talent has been a bigger problem for the Browns than coaching.

Nfl speed > sec speed > Oregon speed > bennies

Banner for Tom Heckert
Early reports were that Heckert thinks he’s on his way out. However they said no moves til after season. Heckert hasn’t been a A+ by any stretch but he’s infused the roster w/ young talent. They better have a real guru ready to replace him. Banner is not a football talent evaluator so to purge Heckert would be rough. Also, first year GMs can rarely assemble a staff in 1 year so that’d hurt this next draft. I’m worried/.
