Chiefs Bench Matt Cassel in Favor of Brady Quinn, Going All In For That #1 Pick
Brady Quinn is now the starter in Kansas City. Romeo Crennel announced that the decision was made to “get everybody’s attention” and that Matt Cassel was not the only reason the Chiefs are at 1-5.
Well, Brady Quinn did start the last game when Cassel was out with the concussion. He obviously did so well that he earned the job. What’s that you say? 4.7 yards per pass attempt. Blaine Gabbert thinks that was embarrassing. We should adjust for the opponent. (Looks up how other quarterbacks have done against Tampa).
Never mind.
Matt Cassel is being replaced by Not Matt Cassel basically, not Brady Quinn. Not Matt Cassel is a popular man in Kansas City at the moment. As soon as those who rooted for Cassel to be benched realize that it’s Brady Quinn who is Plan B, well, they’ll probably still root for the team to get the #1 pick. In a week after the GM, Scott Pioli, got skewered for sticking with Cassel for four years, the move is made. Cassel is not good. The problem is that Cassel is probably still the best quarterback on the roster. Brady Quinn once played for Romeo Crennel and Crennel went with Anderson over Quinn.
I’m looking for silver lining here. You know what, he’s only thrown 385 passes in his NFL career. Maybe he’s a late bloomer. Let’s look up all other quarterbacks drafted in the first two rounds who threw between 200 and 600 passes by age 27, and averaged fewer than 6 yards per attempt.
On second thought, let’s not do that. Here’s to rooting for Quinn’s old team Cleveland and Jacksonville to get a few wins this year.

Yet they won’t trade Dwayne Bowe which they should to acquire more draft picks and really help the team out.

Give Quinn two more years as an understudy and when he is Weeden’s age they’ll know what they have.
Going to be an awesome weekend for those who hate the Lady of the Lake.

I hope Cleveland gets the number 1 pick and gets a massive haul of 1st and 2nd rounders for the right to draft Matt Barkley.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:39 PM
I love when this happens, especially with head coaches. Everyone here was so thrilled to be rid of Mike Tice that it took several years for everyone to realize how bad Brad Childress was.

2007 23 Dwayne Bowe Louisiana State WR
2008 5 Glenn Dorsey Louisiana State DT
2008 15 Branden Albert Virginia G
2009 3 Tyson Jackson Louisiana State DE
2010 5 Eric Berry Tennessee S
2011 26 Jonathan Baldwin Pittsburgh WR
2012 11 Dontari Poe Memphis NT
Not sure that will help.

I’d love to see a Worst Quarterback Controversies compilation post. This would have to be towards the top of the list. John Beck + Sex Cannon last year has to be up there. Andrew Walter and Aaron Brooks for the Raiders comes to mind.

I think the Browns used to have a QB by that name.
Ha! See, I totally knew it. Sorry it’s the same dude, Lisk.

I got Jamaal Charles on my fantasy team. His performance will be dramatically affected by this announcement (not in a good way)

I’m torn. On the one hand, he’s Brady Quinn, and he’s terrible. On the other hand, it’s clear that we were not going to win another game with The Matt Cassel Interception and Fumble Experience.
You watch, though. Chiefs will go 1-15 this year, secure the #1, and talk themselves into Optimus Klein.

I wasnt able to make the trip — but my buddies bachelor party was in Vegas and they were at Wet Republic. Cassell and his family\friends were in the cabana next to my friends, they all said how he was a cool dude and gave the groom-to-be a good natured ribbing. He also told my friend that everyone hated Todd Haley. Needless to say, alof of Matt Cassell manlove happened that weekend.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:43 PM
…and Quinn will be running into the Raiders buzz saw that was able to put away a strong Jacksonville team that lost their starting RB, QB, and CB during the game…and they did it in overtime.

The only bad thing I’ve ever heard about Cassell is his Quarterbacking ability. Every interview I’ve heard with him he’s seemed very self depreciating and seemed to be very self aware.

Well Flacco just threw up a 3.4 YPA and Queefer has me all set to believe that makes him elite. Or, maybe we can just blame the Chiefs OC?
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Gabbert’s the head of that class. I will not stop until people realize he is merely mediocre. I’m his biggest fan.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Still get sick at how the Saints choked their game against this sad sack away.
I don’t know that going for that #1 pick will help Pioli or Crennel though, Lisk. I think both of them, as well as the Cassel-Quinn hydra of failure, are gone at season’s end. Nothing Pioli has done in FA or the Draft suggests he’s going to turn it around. Same for Crennel, who’s likely destined for a career coordinator position.
So who makes that pick at #1 come next April? Nick Saban?

that doesn’t sound so bad, to be honest.

I feel like any discussion of sad QB controversies has to include Matt Moore/Jimmy Clausen from 2010.

derek anderson vs. brady quinn.
just…

I believe it was decided over the weekend that this year’s version of “Suck for Luck” is “Geno-Schneid.”

Is Geno Smith still the predicted #1 overall? Has he been exposed a little when not playing TeLOLxas?
/might have forced that one

I’m really hoping it will be Les Miles.
Fredo, you owe me a Coke.

Ah yes, with Danny Wuerffel in the mix as well
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Rick is probably going to see some regular season snaps this year. God help ya, Lisk.

The latter quality is a good thing given the former quality.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:01 PM
The 92 Seahawks featured an all-out war between Stan Gelbaugh, Kelly Stouffer and Dan McGwire.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:01 PM
And now I get to sit through meetings the rest of the day. Ugh.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:02 PM
One more pick from LSU will help: Les Miles. Please please please please.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Did Shane Matthews and Jim Miller actually have a competition or were they always switching back in when the other guy got hurt? I’ve tried so hard to forget the 2001 Bears that I can’t recall
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
People may look back on Kevin Kolb\John Skelton as a great bad QB race.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:04 PM
I doubt it. And let’s be honest: Even if Geno had continued to buzzsaw the Big 12, by the time the draft rolled around the “experts” would have successfully pushed the notion that Barkley was the most NFL ready.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:04 PM
Stouffer may not have been a good NFL QB, but he offers a superb line of frozen-food entrees.

How bout a Fresca?
Billy Joe vs Billy Joe still tops all of them.

Dear God, I even blocked out Danny Wuerffel from my memory banks. No wonder we sucked.

The fact that Kelly Stouffer was a first rounder at all…I mean, CSU didn’t win a football game until like 1992.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:17 PM
Derek Anderson/Matt Leinart/Max Hall/John Skelton of 2010 Cardinals fame would like to be involved in any and all bad QB comparisons.

S-E-C! S-E-C! S-E…oh
Hard to bust on the Chefs too much. A lot of these guys — Dorsey, Jackson, Berry — were considered studs coming out of college.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Heath Shuler/Gus Frerotte was captivating

S-E-C! S-E-C! S-E…oh

Dorsey and Berry are the ones that surprise me since they were major studs in college and it was expected that they’d replicate that in the pros. Jackson, otoh, was a surprise because no one had him pegged as a Top 5 prospect until the Chiefs up and grabbed him.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:35 PM
I still think Berry ends up being a pretty damn good safety. A lot of KC’s defensive struggles stem from that terrible offense giving opponents 15-20 possessions a game, many beginning in KC territory. That defense isn’t as bad as the stats indicate.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:37 PM
How about when the Ol’ ball coach was in DC?
2002 (starts): Shane Matthews (7) / Patrick Ramsey (5) / Danny Wuerffel (4)
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Dorsey is fucking terrible, Berry could still be something.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:42 PM
My head still spins at the thought that JaCarcass somehow became the No. 1 overall pick in 2007. I wanted to drive over to Oakland and tell Skeletor he was making a terrible, terrible mistake, but fuck it, when did Al ever listen to anyone?
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Dorsey is fucking terrible
Dorsey was a stud at LSU and looked to be the next great DT. But he was also always dealing with injuries. Guessing they’ve affected him in KC as well.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Its incredible how many great defensive players LSU has had over the last 10 years.
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:54 PM
The Dorsey/Rattay battle of 2003 was pretty epic

1 Quinn drops back, almost in such a hurry he almost falls over
2 First read is taken, so without looking fires a rocket to his tight end
3 Only his target is only like 2 yards pass the line of scrimmage
4 Football whistles behind ear of target, almost intercepted
5 Adjust jersey to display show of arms
6 repeat
