Will Bill Simmons, Stan Van Gundy, Magic Johnson and Mike Wilbon Work on NBA Countdown?
The rumors of Bill Simmons replacing Chris Broussard on NBA countdown have grown to the point that the latter resorted to responding on his twitter account:
Lol. This twitter stuff is crazy. I have not been fired; I still work at ESPN.
— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) September 11, 2012
It began back on August 23, when we reported Simmons was being “strongly considered” as an addition to NBA Countdown, with Broussard being re-assigned into some type of reporter role. Sports by Brooks tweeted this week that Simmons was indeed going to replace Broussard, and that Stan Van Gundy was also joining Countdown, replacing Jon Barry.
If both changes happen, I think this could be a stroke of brilliance by the network. Anyone who watched the show during the NBA Finals could see how strange it was to have Broussard on set. He didn’t really have a role on the show – insider? Guy with an opinion? – and ended up just talking strategy with two former NBA players. It pulled him away from the area he excels in – reporting – and that showed when he struggled during free agency and then yelled at all the “haters” on twitter. Barry, like he was during his NBA career, was a solid role player. Van Gundy, one of the best quotes in the league during his years as a coach, is blunt and hilarious, but never comes across as annoying or a know-it-all.
Toss in Van Gundy’s dust-up last season with Dwight Howard, Howard’s move to the Lakers, Magic being a part-owner of the Lakers, and Bill Simmons being a Celtics fan, and you’ve got a recipe for significant improvement. And the show will be based in LA, which might mean additional security could be necessary for Van Gundy.
ESPN’s new team – at least the one being discussed – is a well-built one:
The affable former coach: Van Gundy
The respected media veteran: Wilbon
The non-traditional media star: Simmons
The Hall of Famer: Magic
The only lingering question will be the host situation. Does Wilbon play it more like Ernie on Inside the NBA, or do they go with no host and rotate the discussion, the way things are done on PTI?

Can they fire Wilbon and Magic as well?

I like each individual Van Gundy, but I’m not sure if two wouldn’t be too much.

Get some hot chicks or get some crazy people bantering and you could actually get me to watch a pregame show. For example, get Starbury and Isiah on set together – who wouldn’t watch that, right…

Three of the most insufferable people in sports broadcasting and a coach who was pushed out of a job by a douchebag. MUST SEE TV.

Ryen Russillo, Bill Simmons, and Bill Walton. I’d watch that show. Russillo is very knowledgeable when it comes to NBA. Can be a bit full of himself, but I think him and Simmons would have good back and forths.

Wilbon will be a drain on that show. They should hire a real host and then they could have something.
I don’t get why they don’t model it after Gameday, by far ESPN’s best pregame show. If Wilbon plays the Fowler role (which I’m skeptical of since he loves himself some Wilbon) then it could be good. But they need that host – I don’t like the PTI rotation idea very much.
I watch as little of this show as possible, since it’s terrible, but my memory was that Magic was not very good. Is that still true?

Who the hell am I kidding – we need some Anthony Lima TV!

The problem isn’t that Wilbon loves him some Wilbon, it’s that Wilbon loves himself some Magic. The laziest, ill-informed, opinions offered by Magic goes unchecked by everyone else on that panel. Wilbon hangs on to Magic’s words like a pre-teen hangs on the handkerchief thrown by Bieber at his concert.

wilbon and rollaids are still on together? than no, this will not be good.

Bill Simmons: Derrick Rose had terrible night.
Wilbon: Hey!(not allowed to say anything bad about Derrick)
Wilbon: Paul Pierce had terrible night.
Simmons: Hey!(not allowed to say anything bad about Paul)
Wankers.

Lol. This twitter stuff is crazy. I have not been fired; I still work at ESPN.
Apropos of nothing, I loathe “Lol” as a catch-all shorthand. Is he really sitting at his computer, looking at Twitter, and guffawing loudly? What about this is making Broussard “laugh out loud”? ZOMG!!!11@!

I already listen to SVG’s idiot brother way more than I want. I want less Van Gundy in my life, not more.
September 13th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
people respect Wilbon? he’s been phoning it in for years.

Simmons & Stan Van def a step up, but that doesn’t address the real problem of the show — Wilbon. As long as he’s still there, it will continue to be unwatchable.
September 13th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
That show will ultimately be decided by the production. Not the technical production but by the show runner that decides the topics, finds out who will say what, etc.
If they try to just have a loose dialogue it will fail severely. Magic is a star-player apologist. Stan has good insight but will have bad delivery and Wilbon thinks he has more credibility than he does. Simmons will be flabbergasted and try to nuke Magic on facts and such, and he sounds terrible. Plus Magic is the name and you cant have your name getting worked over the coals on a repeated basis.
Perhaps Simmons can get a dead smoker’s voicebox inserted to make him sound like he hit puberty.

lol

I would agree he is the main problem, but Magic has to go too. I like Der Kaiser’s idea of Russillo as the host, and then Simmons and SVG could work. It’s almost impossible to even imagine ESPN doing something like that though.

Does it bother anybody else that Wilbon refers to Magic as “Earvin”? What a pretentious assclown. 10-years ago I liked him and hated Kornheiser, now it’s completely reversed.

It should be illegal to hear Bill Simmons nasally voice
September 13th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Wilbon : Magic, what do you think of this Celtics-Heat game
Magic: What I wanna imagine is what if the Lakers were playing!!
Simmons: You guys should have let me attended the game
Magic: I mean Kobe vs LEBRON!!
Simmons: Did you know I wrote my basketball book instead of going to the 2008 Olympics, which I could have went for free
Magic: I mean Gasol vs Bosh!!!!
Simmons: When is my B.S. report going up?
Magic: You know Billy we would take you down
Simmons: Oh come on, Don’t make me go to Grantland and do this

Would’ve preferred someone more X and O – say Jeff Van Gundy. JVG is such a nerd, but a great mind, compared to Stan, who is also a great mind but is much more outgoing and affable that I think the chemistry would’ve been great…Of course then we’d have individuals on set who understood the games they were breaking down…Seems to be a no-no for NBA telecasts.
