Dwight Howard Quits Against the Knicks, Keeps Trying to Get Stan Van Gundy Fired
Tony Allen of the Grizzlies saw it. Chuck and Kenny from Inside the NBA saw it. Everyone watching saw it. Dwight Howard further dented whatever legacy he may be building by quitting in embarrassing fashion in a nationally-televised game against the Knicks.
Howard, in one of the worst efforts of his career, didn’t score a basket until late in the third quarter. He finished with eight points, eight rebounds, five turnovers and five fouls in a performance nobody will soon forget. The Magic were booed lustily in a 96-80 defeat.
He essentially stuck his middle finger up to Stan Van Gundy, and then raised the other middle finger to management for telling Van Gundy he wanted him fired. How the two can co-exist for the final three weeks of the regular season, plus the playoffs is beyond me.
Last month Mike D’Antoni quit as coach of the Knicks. In 2011, Jerry Sloan of the Jazz lost a power struggle to Deron Williams and resigned. Those two didn’t want to get pink-slipped. SVG is far too proud a man to do that.
So the Magic – losers of five in a row – will continue to lose. Maybe they’ll get broomed in the first round by somebody.
As for Dwight Howard … remember when he got to the finals three years ago and was on the cusp of being one of the league’s best 3-4 players? It’s been quite a tumble. He’s only 26, but he’s got serious work to do if he wants to get into that elite Jabbar/Ewing/Olajuwon/David Robinson/Shaq class of centers in the last 30 years.

if he retired right now, he’d be a hall of famer…..he has serious work to do?? LOL…dont mention how he just came back from injury…but that’s okay…its hate on Howard time…dont mention how it was a bush league move of Stan to say that now, after he has known all season his head is on the chopping block
not your best article TBL

whats funny is the terrible media in NY and NJ are now bashing Howard after they spent all summer slobbering over him and dreaming of him in a larger market like the dump called Brooklyn…you have baseball scribes writing about Howard, trashing him….they build you up to rip you down
adios Stan Van…he had a great run
April 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Charles Barkley wants a ‘no snitching’ policy adopted by Orlando execs. I never get why people take that goofball seriously.
April 6th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
if he retired right now, he’d be a hall of famer…..
based on what? State your case, counselor.
As for Dwight v SVG, it’s a battle Ron Jeremy is destined to lose. No coach wins when they feud with the big team star. The greater concern is this: if not being liked turns Happy Dwight into Sullen Dwight, then how can any coach/team hope to keep him happy enough for long enough to win it all?
April 6th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Dwight’s smarmy, smirking bullshit is, well, bullshit. I hope his career goes off the rails.
April 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
And let’s remember that all of this is of Dwight’s own making. He could have pushed through a trade to NY/NJ. He could have signed a long-term extension to stay in Orlando. He could have told everyone “I’m playing this year in Orlando and then hitting FA.” Any of those options were valid.
Instead he took to what amounted to a snooze button option. It didn’t solve the long-term issues and just ramped up the pressure.

It’s great to hear from irish (legend), but I think both guys are at fault on this one. Dwight hasn’t handled the situation well and Stan hasn’t helped. One big case of ‘When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong’.

If I recall, they were fed up with Akeem in HOU once upon a time.

its funny how all the Stan Van Gundy apologists are coming out of the woodwork….same people who trashed the Master of Panic…its hilarious

How many years does SVG have on his contract? I’d wait to get fired and collect before resigning.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Whoever was privy to the conversation hung Dwight out to dry by informing Van Gundy. Van Gundy in turn hung his informant out to dry because the number of people privy to that convo has to be miniscule. They all handled it badly. Van Gundy handled it the worst.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Yesterday’s news conference resembled a wife beater walking in on his wife telling everyone he beats the shit of her but he doesn’t know it so he just keeps telling jokes no one is laughing at.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
hope his career goes off the rails Hernia? LOL, its not like he is some injury prone center, most durable player in the league not named Lebron…and not to mention a top 5 talent…has he made bad decisions/bad comments this year? sure has..one of his worst years as far as PR goes…but Stan did this at the wrong time…he quit
April 6th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Not the guy who is trying to get him fired by not playing ?
April 6th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
BF, I feel the same way.
He has crushed his image by his rank immaturity. He’ll still get paid in free agency, but he has pissed away even more $ with the stunt last night. Quitting on your team, and making it that evident? That’s way outta line.
Also, it takes a special guy to coach in the NBA. Most humans wouldn’t want to put up with the crap Van Gundy had to endure. I’m not his biggest fan, but he has been hosed in Miami and now Orlando. I’d be tempted to go “GTFO” to the NBA for a while.

i don’t deny he’s a HOFer. Never said he wasn’t. But right now his career is more Alonzo Mourning than Ewing/Dream/DRob, etc. Not that there’s anything wrong with that …
April 6th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
This just in: People hate their bosses and bitch about them all the time. People that manage other people that can’t handle that criticism need to find something else to do with their careers.

I believe its up in 2013
April 6th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Evidently, he’s been trying to get him fired the whole time, but he’s been busting his ass. Van Gundy decided to do what neither Howard or anyone else in the organization did and take it public.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
One of these is not like the others…..

He gets it.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Huh? This would be true if he was rumored with the Knicks. People care more about the red bulls than the nets.
Oh yea, and Brooklyn got some good bar spots to hang. It’s far from a dump.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Dwight Howard is an asshat. A physically gifted, mentally fragile asshat.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Yeah Irish! Stop watching New Jack City on a loop!!!
April 6th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Mourning? cmon at least Dikembe won DPOY multiple times lol….are those guys first ballot HOFs? D Howard is already
April 6th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
If it’s possible for a sports franchise to be less relevant in the state of New Jersey than the NHL Devils, it would have to be the NBA Nets. Moving to Brooklyn is much better than languishing in Newark.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Lost is that Dwight has scored 28 points TOTAL against the Knicks in 3 games this season.
In Chandler we trust.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
He has crushed his image by his rank immaturity. He’ll still get paid in free agency, but he has pissed away even more $ with the stunt last night. Quitting on your team, and making it that evident? That’s way outta line.
That’s part of the problem. If he goes out, puts up 18 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks and they still lose, people shift the blame to SVG for having outed what was private team business. Since he didn’t, the blame goes to him for not having done enough.
And don’t think this is just on Howard or Van Gundy. The Magic’s front office and their owner have as much blame to share for letting things get this bad.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Dwight = Ben Wallace with more dunks?
April 6th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
but the Magic want Howard to commit before training camp of next year to avoid all this drama…but he prob wont so the drama will continue….I said at the beg of the year on here, Howard would stay & I still believe that…Stan never one to shy away from giving his opinion, was in the wrong here…you can say Howard was distracted last night, but to say he quit is wrong..ive seen him play worst games than that, but all eyez were on him
April 6th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Best bet for the Magic now is to trade Dwight in the offseason to Phoenix for Gortat and spare parts.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I can’t disagree there. I guess he wasn’t going to deny anymore and tow the company line. But as SVG told the reporter, he didn’t have a “source” – he just works with people.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
@Brawny- Ben Wallace lol
April 6th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
The Magic’s front office and their owner have as much blame to share for letting things get this bad.
Smells like leadership issues. Who said, “the fish dies from the head first” or something like that?
I see your point about stats. To me, even if Howard’s numbers weren’t that good, but it looked like he was hustling (diving for loose balls, showing emotion), the media may have given him a pass for last night.
False hustle is devious, though. Tony Allen noted it. I’ll bet other players around the league noted it also. That is a tell-tale sign.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
@Jersey- Chandler def making a case for DPOY, but that will be #4 in a row for D Howard this year…he won it for not even playing the past 2 games before the Knicks loss

Gortat aka the POLISH HAMMER! has turned into a top 5 center…/pats back
April 6th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
@Irish – Its a shame it got to this point. Obviously, Magic are going forward with Dwight, but he needs grow up some more and settle all this bullshit and drama that has followed him around the last couple years. Of course that team needs to be retooled around him as well.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
But as SVG told the reporter, he didn’t have a “source” – he just works with people
when Otis and Stan met over the summer and had lunch, Otis told him then…SVG has known this all season long
April 6th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
*toe not tow
April 6th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Why would they do that when they could get Tiago Splitter, Kawhi Leonard and parts from the Spurs?
April 6th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
@brawnytom agree, they have to make moves, I have confidence my man Alex Martins will get it done & fire Otis, let Stan go, and make major moves this summer…anything to keep Howard, a top 5 talent
April 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
whats up Darrell?!?!
April 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Everybody is in the wrong here. Howard is wrong for trying to get the coach fired. Management is dumb for telling the ooach. The coach is being petty by going to the media. They all fucked up. If this keeps up, they’ll be the Knicks of the South.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
I was having this discussion the other day. It’s D-Ho, LeBron then Chandler. Chandler has been absolutely amazing this year. His games against D-Ho prove it. But D-Ho has put up another year of just being the best defensive presence on the court. Him not being DPOY would just be silly.
I am really reveling in this Orlando fiasco mess, though. Everyone involved -The FO, D-Ho, SVG- has been handling the Howard FA situation as badly as you can save for the FO putting the gun to Howard’s temple right before the trade deadline. At the end of the day, the Magic Organization is ultimately going to be screwed on this for not knowing exactly what to do 90% of the time. Dwight won’t be a Magic by next trade deadline and SVG if fired (and he’s GOT to be fired, right?) will probably be in LA coaching another team with a superstar.

Irish and Jersey dropping comments in posts? Are Lefty and Fetch around? What year is this?
April 6th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
This. Plus it almost came across as threatening. Towering over SVG “we dont have any problems now…. do we…”
April 6th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Stan Van Gundy would break Alonzo Mourning’s leg if he did this though…
April 6th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
If he retired today Dwight Howard would be a Hall of Famer??? In what world?
April 6th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
@Jersey- Stan has to go, he has lost the team…its obvious…but it all starts at the top…this season has been a shitty one for the Magic…it all started with the drunk dialing douche playing paddle and drinking wine, Dan Fegan, Dwight’s public comments, but they are still a playoff team…but theyll be swept in the 1st rd
April 6th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Maybe I’m missing something, but how exactly is Howard a lock for first round hall of famer? Dude’s an incredible defensive player, but he hasn’t really won anything or developed any semblance of an offensive game. The Ben Wallace comparison is pretty spot on in my eyes, except Wallace won more games.
Obviously it’s still early, but I don’t see it.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:36 AM

ha i took a new job where they blocked the site, but i have today off so here i am…i miss the banter on this site
April 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Because Dwight has been to that shitty town and wishes not to live there 40 percent of the year.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Not really relevant to the HOF. If that were the case you would have to kick a bunch out for ‘never really won anything’.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
If Dwight is serious about winning, he’d go to the River Walk. If instead he cares about pretty towns who are indifferent if their team constantly underachieves, then lucky you.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Settle down now… I don’t think he’s first ballot if he retires now, but if he has 8 more years like his first 8, he’ll have been the best center in the league for 10+ years run. He’s a petulant d-bag who never won anything, but so far that’s what LeBron is too.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Would the Spurs be trading Parker, Duncan or Ginobli in that scenario Brawny? Besides river walk wont be about winning once Duncan and Pop retire after this year.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
They’ve already etched Iblocka’s name on the award.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
I’m all for stopping this Reggie Miller business before it becomes official
April 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
I mentioned this yesterday, but I wonder how much the top 3 for that team playing 28 mpg will help them out come playoff time. Their top 12 is pretty ridiculous, and they legit win games with their second unit playing more minutes than the first. Buford/Pops just working the league this year.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
@Sean Jean my man the Canes winning the BCS title this year…you know it!…but Howard is the most dominant big man since Shaq…he will no doubt be in the hall
April 6th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Pencil them in for 50 wins next year. They’re building the depth to overcome the loss of Duncan, as long as Pop sticks around. Parker doesn’t turn 30 until May.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
ha Iblaka Flame is leading the league in blocks clown, but he isnt the dominant force that Howard is on that end
April 6th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Unless they win the Championship, I don’t think this happens this year. But when Duncan retires, Pop is going to retire with him.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
DPOY isn’t won on blocks alone. Plus, I could average 2 blocks a game in the middle for that squad.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Ha. Yeah right. The Canes will be better without Jacory, but I think they’ll still suck. They’ll miss Miller a ton.
Anyway, I know winning has nothing to do with HOF, but he really hasn’t won a thing other than the one title year. He is nowhere even remotely near the level Shaq was at.
April 6th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Shaq was what 27 when he first won a title? But he will never be the dominant force Shaq was on the offensive end of the floor. At the same time he will never be the defensive liability that Shaq was. Dwight is a freak but no where near as freakish as Shaq was. The guy gives up 3 inches and 50 pounds to Shaq.
April 6th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Right, but Dwight hasn’t done anything yet. I didn’t say he won’t. My points are in dispute that he is a HOF as of today. Not his entire career.
April 6th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Also, Shaq was 28 when he first won a title I do believe. Just for the record.
And Shaq wasn’t a defensive liability in his prime. That’s silly. He was an All defense first teamer.
April 6th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
if he retired today Sean Jean, he would be…he hasnt won a title no, but his list of accomplishments are endless
D-HO D-HO D-HO
April 6th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Shaq never won DPOY, never made 1st team all defense
April 6th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
You’re right. Shaq didn’t make first team, but made 2nd team more than once. I would say that at least promotes him beyond “defensive liability.”

April 6th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
I respectfully disagree. Freakish athlete with crazy potential, great defender, above average overall player.
