The 49ers Have 14 Draft Picks in 2013. Here’s a Darrelle Revis Trade That Could Work
The idea of the Jets trading Darrelle Revis isn’t insane. They have holes everywhere on offense and defense thanks to general ineptitude by former GM Mike Tannenbaum. In order, I’d say their needs are linebacker, running back, offensive line, safety and tight end. They had zero depth anywhere when injuries hit in 2012. I’m not listing QB because for now they’re stuck with Sanchez.
The problem: How do you put a value on a player coming off a torn ACL, who will play for one more year and then demand another big deal at the age of 29?
It’s virtually impossible to put a price on Revis. He’s not going to get anywhere near what the Rams got for RG3 (two #1′s), so perish that thought. The popular sentiment seems to be: Go out and get a contender to give up their No. 1 pick at the end of the first round.
Obviously New England is out, but what about Denver? Don’t think Broncos fans have forgotten their playoff loss – even though they were 3rd against the pass last season (199 ypg).
Green Bay’s secondary (and defense in general) is horrendous. Revis, who is from Pennsylvania, surely will be connected to the Steelers at some point, even though Pittsburgh was No. 1 against the pass (185 ypg) in 2012. New Orleans had the worst secondary in the NFL, how about them?
What about San Francisco? Yes, the 49ers already have a strong secondary. Yes, the 49ers already have a solid trio of cornerbacks (Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver). The 49ers are in the Super Bowl, and just played in the NFC Championship game in 2012. The 49ers had one of the highest payrolls in the league last year. What would they want with Revis, a guy they’re going to have to pay big money to after one year?
Well, for starters, the 49ers have 14 draft picks (!) in 2013, and their top pick last year, receiver AJ Jenkins, played in three games and was targeted once. Point is, they’re so loaded, there’s no room for the young guys to play. They’re a young team to begin with, so what are you going to do with 14 draft picks?
Yes, they’ve got a lot of free agents this year. And four of the top five passing offenses from 2012 are in the NFC, and that doesn’t even include Green Bay (Rodgers) or New York (Eli). If Matt Ryan doesn’t turn the ball over twice in the second half last weekend – both were his miscues, not necessarily great plays by the 49ers – you’re probably agreeing more with me as I lead up to the big reveal:
The Jets ask for RB LaMichael James, two 3rd round picks, a fifth round pick and a sixth round pick for Revis. That still leaves the 49ers with 10 drafts picks, including a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It also gives them a new No. 1 cornerback.
The not enough crowd will say: You aren’t getting enough for a guy who was the No. 1 defensive player in the league in 2010 and 2011.
The too much crowd will say Revis is coming off an injury and the Jets aren’t in a favorable position to ask for so much.
Why I think it works: The deal allows the Jets to let Shonn Greene walk, and head into free agency/the draft with a backfield of James/Bilal Powell. You could let James handle punts so Jeremy Kerley doesn’t have to fair catch everything. Joe McKnight could exclusively be used on kickoffs (until he gets inevitably hurt). Normally, I think asking for four draft picks is excessive, but, as stated earlier, the multiple picks are more valuable than say, one first round pick.
Why it works for San Francisco? Well holy shit your elite defense just added a star, and you gave up spare parts (remember, James is only playing because the No. 2 RB, Kendall Hunter, tore his Achilles) and middling draft picks.

Suh and a 3rd for Revis and a 2nd. Only after Revis agrees to contract extension though.
January 24th, 2013 at 6:47 PM
If I’m the 49ers, I’m not so sure I want to trade James, he seemed like he might have a little something-something in the playoffs this year, if he were to get some carries. Frank Gore turns 30 next year, he’s going to fall off a cliff at some point.
January 24th, 2013 at 6:48 PM
So you’re buying that PR, eh? Make no mistake, Rex was, and probably still is picking the players
January 24th, 2013 at 6:50 PM
Awful haul if Revis returns to anything near his former self
January 24th, 2013 at 6:53 PM
When was the last time a trade involving relevant players on each side happened in the NFL? It seems like it’s only players for picks these days.
January 24th, 2013 at 6:55 PM
Deus, Portis-Bailey was big. Not sure if that’s the last one
January 24th, 2013 at 7:05 PM
If I’m the GM in a passing NFL, and I have basically the only true shutdown corner back in the NFL, I’m not trading him on a whim or for the appearance of being proactive. You brought in a real offensive coordinator. Use that wasted energy being exerted on talking about getting rid of one of the best defensive players in the game to go out and find a receiver for Sanchez to throw to. It is criminal that a team that brought in Tim Tebow thought they were too good to look at Plax, TO, or even Chad last year.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:12 PM
Deus, Portis-Bailey was big. Not sure if that’s the last one
When was that? 10 years ago? It’s hard to think of a bigger one since then.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:14 PM
There was the Mike Goodson/Bruce Campbell blockbuster last summer.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:17 PM
Kolb for Rodgers-Cromartie is the biggest one I can think of since then.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:18 PM
there was also Darryl Tapp for Chris Clemons, which worked out great for the Eagles.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:21 PM
I get the impression a me-first guy like Revis (despite whether his holdouts are in his own best interest) would fit well with the Niners.
Also, Adrian Peterson probably keeps his trade value higher.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:23 PM
I think he’d fit well with any team willing to use him properly. He’s a great player
January 24th, 2013 at 7:24 PM
Stevie johnson made revis look bad many times
January 24th, 2013 at 7:25 PM
Kolb for Rodgers-Cromartie is the biggest one I can think of since then.
Well, it seemed big at the time. But Kolb hasn’t done much to justify it as a ‘player for player blockbuster’ since then.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:25 PM
In fact you could argue with Kolb that he didn’t do much before the trade to justify that label either.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:28 PM
I’m using “worked out” in a very loose sense, but is Schaub the only backup in recent memory that impressed in his appearances and then worked out when he was acquired as a free agent/trade by another team? Cassell, Kolb, Flynn all come to mind for times that it didn’t really work.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:29 PM
I actually meant to type the opposite…would not fit.
Nonetheless, you are correct. Just not sure Baalke/Harbuagh would pursue it. I could easily be wrong. It has happened twice before.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:31 PM
Gannon…but he was more of an established backup, but Marty didn’t let him spread his wings like Gruden.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:32 PM
I can’t think of any other quarterbacks between Hasselbeck and the present except Schaub. But at other positions, sure, although back-up might not be an accurate team (I’m thinking Michael Turner, I know he sucks now but he had some good years).
January 24th, 2013 at 7:32 PM
team = term
January 24th, 2013 at 7:34 PM
I think of his as more of a failed starter turned backup rather than a guy drafted and only playing as a backup/spot starter like Schaub. Of course that’s what you just said by “established backup”, just wanted to add like 6x the amount of words to make the same point.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:34 PM
If the Jets get a 1st for Revis, I’d die laughing at whomever gives it away.
He’s more like a 2nd and possibly a bonus pick (2nd/3rd/4th) for a Pro Bowl. He’s a DB with a big knee injury, malconent and on the wrong side of his prime. I liked NO/ATL/DAL as good landing spots but have no idea about their cap space.
One would need to know how his contact bonuses accelerate prior to the trade. That’s a big cap hit for the NYJ. If the Jets trade him and the cap hit is sizeable, that’s all you need to know about your 2013 Jets.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:34 PM
would Mark Brunell count? maybe Trent Green? it’s definitely a short list.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:35 PM
No one ever acknowledged my Suh proposal. For shame.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:35 PM
I would think his value would go down as it becomes more of a passing league instead of vice versa.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:36 PM
Scripty hit it on the head: revis is injury prone, always holds out, and a huge bitch
January 24th, 2013 at 7:36 PM
This is the most cynical scenario. On the other side, he’s 27, plays a premium position, and has been dominant.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:37 PM
Vlad, we’ve become numb to your lions trades
January 24th, 2013 at 7:37 PM
No one ever acknowledged my Suh proposal. For shame.
Teammates would get tired of having to lend him money because he spent all of his on fines.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:37 PM
Revis >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Suh
January 24th, 2013 at 7:39 PM
Suh’s got more talent and has 2 more years on his contract.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:39 PM
There’s an argument for a shutdown cb being the most valuable player in the sport outside of a top qb. Tackle and pass rusher are huge too, but Revis enables such schematic freedom, assuming his knee is good
January 24th, 2013 at 7:40 PM
The age and contract go to Suh, but he isn’t in Revis’ league as a player
January 24th, 2013 at 7:40 PM
Vlad, i cannot quantify how much more fun the sabres are to watch now without Derek Roy.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:42 PM
What this tells me is the Jets might be ready to go Nuclear on this roster. They are getting at top ten pick in 2014 fo sho.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:46 PM
I just assumed you were drunk.
Another drunk? If the league is moving to more passing and you have the best guy at defending that, how would his value go down? That like saying, “Aldon Smith is really good at sacking the QB, as QBs continue to attempt more passes Aldon just wont be as valuable”
January 24th, 2013 at 7:48 PM
Rex Ryan would let his brother fuck his wife to get Suh on the Jets. I hate Suh. But dude has skills.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:51 PM
More important to have multiple good defensive backs instead of spending a bunch of money on one guy because he’s ‘elite’. Not really the same as with Aldon Smith since each cornerback is responsible for a certain coverage, whereas each pass rusher is basically trying to accomplish the same goal — i.e. get to the QB.
With that said, yes I am drunk right now.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:57 PM
Your link of Niner free agents has guys not even on their team.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:58 PM
LaMichael James is TINY. There’s now way he can shoulder the load on the ground for a season.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:59 PM
As for Revis, I wouldn’t offer much. It’s far too risky.
Scenario A – He’s not AD and actually comes back as a shadow of his former self. Congrats you just dumped a bunch of draft picks or players for an average or perhaps worse corner.
Scenario B – He is a genetic freak like AD and comes back as a star. Congrats you now have to deal with a guy who is going to holdout if you don’t give him top dollar. BTW, he’ll be on the downside of his career.
Scenario C – Split the difference, he comes back as a good but not elite corner. Will his ego still demand top dollar? Did you overpay?
Far too much risk for the potential upside. AD is the exception, not the rule. You cannot bid into Revis assuming he is another exception.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:59 PM
Fuck no!
The Niners need defensive line depth and linebacker depth. Trading for a washed up, never healthy, soon to be free agent is the exact opposite of how the Niners philosophy has been to get them where they are.
Dumb.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:04 PM
I’d rather get Goldson resigned.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:04 PM
LaMichael James is TINY. There’s now way he can shoulder the load on the ground for a season.
Yes. He’s like a Trung Canidate/Dante Hall. A 5-15 play guy who is going to spend 4-8 games a year out hurt if you try him as an everydown player. I think Harbaugh will find ways to use him eventually. But he’s a luxury for a good team, not a piece to build your roster around.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:07 PM
Well cheers to you!
I get what you’re saying but when you have a corner like Revis/Champ/Deion in their prime they can completely take away or significantly limit the other teams best WR. WTF would Detroit do if you could shutdown Megatron? It allows safeties to cheat against the run or help out on other match ups.
It is not dissimilar to a dominant pass rusher. Aldon Smith dictates what the offense can do, whether they choose to double him with two lineman or constantly keep in a RB or TE to help, they lose options and give the defense an advantage.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:08 PM
And a kicker.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:13 PM
Dick bavetta and joey crawford reffing the celtics-knicks game…get ready for an “Ump Show”
January 24th, 2013 at 8:16 PM
Bavetta still officiating is an embarrassment. Crawford is disliked, but does a good job
January 24th, 2013 at 8:17 PM
If the Jets get a 1st for Revis, I’d die laughing at whomever gives it away.
He’s more like a 2nd and possibly a bonus pick (2nd/3rd/4th) for a Pro Bowl. He’s a DB with a big knee injury, malconent and on the wrong side of his prime. I liked NO/ATL/DAL as good landing spots but have no idea about their cap space.
Dallas just paid retail for a FA corner, and drafted a first round corner, and has a slot corner signed. So they’re not a viable option. Never mind the ridiculous cap room.
Atlanta has Dunta Robinson and Asante Samuel, but even more than that they had franchised Brent Grimes this year, and then he got hurt. So they’ve got a hurt corner they can pay if they want.
New Orleans needs guys, but they don’t have a second round pick this draft, so that’s bad for them as a viable candidate. Unless you traded Revis and your own 2nd for NO’s first, maybe.
Who’s got money, who wants to play man defense, who needs corners? Maybe the Colts, maybe Tampa Bay. I wonder if Houston could weasel a way to get him and get off of Kareem Jackson.
But it all comes down to who wants to fight this guy and his agent about how he’s worth QB money, and 13% of your whole cap, or he’s not coming? And who wants to do that instead of getting a cost controlled guy who is signed for 4 years guaranteed, even if you don’t know if he’ll pan out?
I’ll say the Colts. That’s where I’d try to deal him. For their first rounder, and ask to swap 2′s, 3′s and get another 4.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:18 PM
Dick Bavetta doesnt have skin, he has more of a lobsterish/skeletor exo-skeleton. A close-up of him on an HD television could traumatize you. Be careful.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:20 PM
I can only assume he’s still employed because of fixing dirt he has on Stern
January 24th, 2013 at 8:21 PM
I’d only trade revis if you can do a sign and trade. This is ostensibly for cap reasons, yet trading revis would actually increase his cap hit to the team in 2013 as it would accelerate the pro rated nature of his signing bonus (or something like that). You’d also not being selling the best defensive back in football at 60 cents on a dollar due to concerns about his knee. Not sure if sign and trades ever happen in the nfl though.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:22 PM
That’s good info Dirt, admittedly I am not up to speed on the NFC teams. I think the team’s this makes sense for are those in the window of conference contention. Me, it’s too much of a hassle. Wouldn’t the Samuel deal last year kind of dictate the market on this anyway?
January 24th, 2013 at 8:24 PM
The Blue Diamond Habenjero Almonds are fantastic.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:24 PM
Revis is a different caliber of player. Impossible to handicap considering the knee though
January 24th, 2013 at 8:27 PM
An evening appearance from dirt? We are among royalty, men!
January 24th, 2013 at 8:27 PM
Seems like teams rarely do well trading picks for veteran players. Most smart teams have realized this. Just look at the trades for Tebow, Holmes, Cromartie, Edwards and… well just look at what all that trading picks for players got the Jets. The are on a steady trend downward. No way the Niners do this.
Smart teams keep picks and the cheap contracts they come with. Maybe they trade a day 3 pick for a cheap guy. No reason to trade multiple picks for damaged goods who is going to want a big contract soon. You will either lose him or have him tie up your cap. Again, look at the Rex Ryan era Jets.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:28 PM
And for all the talk about the acrimonious relationship between revis and the jets, a significant part of that was revis’ agents feeling as though tannenbaum lied to them back when they were representing a former jet who’s name escapes me right now. Removing tannenbaum eliminates a significant roadblock to getting a deal done. Also, I’m 99 percent sure the jets wrote a clause into this contract that voids revis 2013 salary if he holds out.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:31 PM
Doubt anything will matter other than years and money
January 24th, 2013 at 8:31 PM
Wouldn’t the Samuel deal last year kind of dictate the market on this anyway?
I think you most likely mean the Nmandi Asamough deal from 2 years ago, that he proved not to be worth anything like.
But he’s going to want to be the highest paid corner, and that means 12 million a year, although he’ll start barking at something above 16 million dollars a year, which is what he got for his first two contract years, when those idiots caved and gave him all the money he could ever want.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:32 PM
Revis is a different caliber of player. Impossible to handicap considering the knee though
I thought he had a big drop off mid-2011. I don’t see it. I see the Jets about 4 times a year.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:34 PM
Just look at the trades for Tebow, Holmes, Cromartie, Edwards and… well just look at what all that trading picks for players got the Jets.
the cromartie trade was a really good trade. The trouble came when they chased Nmandi, and then paid Cromartie most of that money to make him feel better. The other ones were not as good.
It’s a tough position to fill. I have no real info on how Vontae Davis played this year, but I heard his name a lot and not for PI.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:36 PM
All the Knicks have to do is withstand this initial Boston push. The Celtics are done.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:37 PM
So gents, what is Suh worth then? He’s healthy and has 2 years left on his deal. The Lions can’t afford to keep him with Megatron and Calvin being the two main cogs taking up major salary cap space.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:38 PM
That’s accurate. He was playing hurt though. All about health IMO
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/15/revis-limited-with-knee-injury/
January 24th, 2013 at 8:41 PM
Sounds like a jets fans WFAN sports talk radio call in trade idea
January 24th, 2013 at 8:46 PM
Revis had the hamstring injury week 3 against the pats in 2011, and after arguably the best season a corner had had in the past 2 decades in 2010, a drop off was probably in cards even without the injury. Though I think he still finished number one in opposing qb rating, as well as completion percentage against in 2011.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:49 PM
Agreed. Had some Planters Habanero nuts when I was in Vegas last week. They sucked ass.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:50 PM
I know in the Giants game at the end of the season, he almost single handedly kept the Jets in the game with his play. He shut down whatever and whoever came to his side of the field. In regards to this premature talk about age and downside of the career when talking about a player still in his 20′s, Charles Woodson won DPOY at the age of 32. Deion was still highly productive as well as Champ Bailey. There is nothing to indicate that he would be at the downside of his career anytime soon.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:53 PM
Browns need to do that Joe Haden deal before the Jets cave and do some preposterous deal that sabotages the market.
January 24th, 2013 at 8:57 PM
There is nothing to indicate that he would be at the downside of his career anytime soon.
season-ending knee injury?; and the knee injury in 2011?
January 24th, 2013 at 9:00 PM
Anthony indicated fasting contributed to his tiff with Garnett. Hilarious
January 24th, 2013 at 9:10 PM
How about Alex Smith and a 3rd and 4th round pick?
January 24th, 2013 at 9:17 PM
Only if you include Jim Harbaugh in the trade, because without him, Smith is the same Alex Smith pre 2011.
January 24th, 2013 at 9:28 PM
I’m a Bronco and Bailey fan that just watched him get torched by Tori Smith for two TDs. Age catches up to everybody but Darrell Green. Plus Revis was never speed guy or the raw athlete that Champ and Deion were. He has always been a 4.5-4.6/40 type that was physical and had great instincts. Woodson’s recent success has been as a safety and hybrid Va-Tech style rover. He is no longer locking down the oppositions #1.
Maybe Revis can become the next Charles (or Rod for that matter) Woodson or maybe he becomes a corner that needs help over the top because his speed is further limited by an ACL tear. Either way it’s a poor investment. You don’t pay $12mm or more to a safety period or to a corner that doesn’t have makeup speed and can’t jam at the line because every time a WR makes a move off the snap his surgically repaired knee buckles.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:00 PM
Champ Bailey is 34 years old!! Charles Woodson is 36, of course they aren’t what they are. But they played alot of prime level football between the age of 28, which is what Revis will be at the start of next season and now. It’s foolish to be talking about a 28 year old cornerback being on the downside of his career.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:04 PM
but they didn’t also have a major knee injury right when they hit that peak.
revis won’t be 2010 revis when he comes back in 2012. but knee surgery has shown he could be close to where he was before he was injured, maybe better, in 2 seasons.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:08 PM
Speaking of Saints…
Payton fires Spagnuolo and the secondary coach (Flajole, I think), and says he’s instituting a 3-4 defense next year.
Never a dull goddamn moment with this team…
January 24th, 2013 at 10:10 PM
payton has firing power, held? i mean i know he s power bc of his success and salary, but he’s the defacto gm too?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:14 PM
Would Revis to Denver for Knowshon Moreno or Ronnie Hillman(plus a collection of picks) work?
Revis to Baltimore for Bernard Pierce(and picks)?
Revis to Philly for Bryce Brown(and picks)?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:17 PM
No, you’re right, he doesn’t have “firing power.” Should’ve rephrased that. However, the team waited to get him back and get his input before going ahead with the axe job. I believe if Payton wanted Spags to stay, he’d have been kept on. Payton and the GM (Loomis) have a good rapport.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:18 PM
Any deal the Jets make should also include the other team having to take Tebow at no extra charge.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:18 PM
thanks for the emails about the mobile site, guys
January 24th, 2013 at 10:20 PM
Wait, you were taking emails about the mobile site? Aw, crap, did I miss the window?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:21 PM
Since the mobile site was brought up, when I get on it at home I always get this thing that pops up saying something about the certificate not being recognized and it asks me if I want to accept it or not. I don’t get it with any other site. Anyone else get that?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:21 PM
is it still being tweaked jason?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:30 PM
otis – yes.
held – yes, a few guys sent in specific complaints, which is great.
Meth – what are you viewing on? Tablet? PC? Imac? and what browser?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:33 PM
Meth – what are you viewing on? Tablet? PC? Imac? and what browser?
Not sure what browser it uses, but a Wii. I assume that’s considered mobile. The pop up I get isn’t an issue really, as soon as you hit accept it goes back to browsing. But it pops up every page I click on.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:35 PM
Darrell, game was closer than i thought it woud be.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:44 PM
took the under 190 on it ap
/also, arizona m8.5 (looks like a loss), clippers m6.5 and zags m9.5
January 24th, 2013 at 10:46 PM
This isn’t 1965, knee surgery isn’t an automatic death sentence, and he doesn’t have an offseason job to get in his way. He can rehab himself back to pre injury levels.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:50 PM
Not having Felton there is wearing Melo down. Felton and the All Star break can’t come soon enough. Plus that will also give the Knicks a chance to get some practices in with STAT and Shumpert and load up for that second half run.
February 27th, 2013 at 12:32 PM
In hindsight, this doesn’t look awful, does it?
