Auston Matthews, the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft, made his debut Wednesday night with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He responded by scoring on his first three shots to earn a hat trick less than 22 minutes into the game.

His mother was delighted by the development. It’s safe to say she didn’t mentally prepare for such a display.

Ah, yes. That’s the good stuff.

Matthews is the fifth player to score three goals in his debut. The last player to score twice in a debut was Alexander Ovechkin in 2005.

UPDATE: Matthews just scored again. He’s the first player to ever score four. He’s the first to ever accomplish the feat.
