UFC 129 Was Awesome, But The Main Event Wasn't

GSP Decisions Another Opponent
Georges St. Pierre is a man with a plan. That plan is great for him, but sucks for everyone else. Every time we see him, he comes into the octagon and wins convincingly. On Saturday, he did so after losing vision in his left eye. Dammit if it didn’t look like he could have finished Jake Shields before his eye went bad though. That’s four straight fights that have gone to decision. Nobody wants to see that. The Anderson Silva talk? Shelved again. The new dream opponent? Nick Diaz, the Strikeforce champion. Depending on his eye and Diaz’s desire to do some boxing (and the whole Showtime/Strikeforce hurdle) who knows when we’ll see GSP again. Not that anyone is really excited at this point.
José Aldo Looks Human
Mark Hominick was up to the task on Saturday night and José gassed towards the end of the fight. It was a pretty epic battle, especially considering the lump that grew on Hominick’s forehead as the fight progressed. By the 5th round, Aldo was just laying on the ground taking a pounding while Hominick tried to knock Aldo out. Unfortunately, the damage was done and Hominick lost despite giving Aldo all he could handle. Who knows what’s next for either of these guys, but I’ll definitely be looking forward to it.
Lyoto Machida and Steven Seagal
Steven Seagal again was involved in the weirdest and coolest thing that happened. First he sensei’d Anderson Silva, now Machida-kun. Lyoto Machida revived his era with his CRANE KICK knockout of Randy Couture. Now Randy is retired, but I know they can get him back in a year or so if a certain other legend agrees to a fight. Seagal explain his powers to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.
Vladamir Matyushenko tho
The Janitor knocked out Jason Brilz in 20 seconds. His career record now stands at 26-5 with those five loses coming to Jon Jones (2010), Lil Nog (2009), Andrei Arlovski (2003), Tito Ortiz (2001) and Vernon White (1999). With the exception of Vernon White (hey, split decisions happen) Matyushenko takes care of the people he’s supposed to take care of.
The Undercard Was Awesome
1st round submission, spinning back fist KO, first round submission, first round TKO, decision, first round KO, decision that featured a Diaz getting thrown around like a rag doll… We didn’t even need the PPV for a great night of fights.
Canada: The Canadian fighters on the card went 6-4 in their fights.
Next Up: UFC 130 isn’t for a freaking month.
