Rashan Gary was one of the nation’s most coveted football recruits in this cycle. The defensive lineman out of Paramus Catholic in New Jersey had fans salivating over the prospect of him lining up for their favorite teams. One Clemson fan was so excited he compared Gary to the KKK, and he meant it favorably.

Yes, a man identifying himself as “Clemson Dan” left a voice mail in the Paramus Catholic athletic department inbox that was enlightening. The day before Gary was set to visit Clemson, the voice mail came in. It said in part:

"“Yes, this here is ‘Clemson Dan,’ and this message is for Mr. Rashan Gary. We just wantin’ to know if you’re coming down here for a visit, you better be serious about it, ’cause there’s only two things we love and that’s Clemson football and the KKK.”"

To be fair, we don’t know if the caller was actually a Clemson fan or someone potentially trying to steer Gary away from Clemson. But forgive me for not being shocked if it was someone from South Carolina. That said, this certainly smells like someone trying to mock Clemson and push Gary away from the school.

Gary picked Michigan six days after the voice mail was sent.

The Paramus Police Department has been investigating the call since the school filed a complaint shortly after it came in. For the record, there is a “Clemson Dan” Twitter account, but it appears inactive.
