Tiger Woods May Miss the Cut at The Open: +4 Opening Round

Tiger Woods missed the cut at the US Open last month in Seattle, and he’s on his way to another missed cut at The Open at St. Andrews. After 10 holes, Tiger Woods was in last place, a bogey-machine embarrassment. He rebounded slightly over the final eight holes to pull himself out of the cellar and get to +4. A 76 may not sound terrible, but everyone else opened strong, and he’s only two shots ahead of the guy in last, Kevin Streelman. Someone named Rod Pampling is at +5.

I thought the Tiger Woods retirement question was silly this week, and I still do after this disastrous 1st round. He hasn’t won a Major since the middle of 2008, and if he doesn’t make the cut at St. Andrews, this is what his last eight Majors will look like:

2013 PGA Championship: T40
2014 Masters DNP
2014 US Open DNP
2014 Open 69
2014 PGA Championship Didn’t make the cut
2015 Masters T17
2015 US Open Didn’t make the cut
2015 Open Didn’t make the cut?

Instead of asking about retirement, the real question the media needs to ask him this weekend: Tiger, are you over that fateful night in your driveway from Thanksgiving weekend 2009? Mentally, is that a hurdle you’ve cleared? It’s something we’ve never seen in sports, so it’s difficult to put it in context – hey, this happened before, and it took this long for him to rebound – can you help us put in to context what the mental road to recovery has been like?

He’ll probably dodge it all, but for me, I don’t want to hear the junk about rebounding in 2013 and winning two tournaments and being ranked #1 in the World. He’s always maintained that Majors are what matter.

Tiger has always maintained Majors are what matter. Will he ever win another?
