The Carolina Panthers Are Making "Creedbombing" a Real Thing

“Creedbombing” is real and it is spectacular. The Carolina Panthers have developed the new trend thanks to linebacker Ben Jacobs and tight end Greg Olson.

What is “Creedbombing?” It’s the process of belting out lyrics by the band Creed when no one is expecting them. Jacobs explained what makes a good Creedbomb:

"“The key is you’ve got to make really deep, direct eye contact. So if you Creedbomb someone you’ve got to look them directly in the eye.”"

On Wednesday as he walked onto the practice field, Jacobs sang, “Hold me now! I’m six feet from the edge and I’m thinking.” Which is apparently a lyric from Creed’s song “One Last Breath.”

Quite frankly, being around people who Creedbomb sounds like a punishment fit for the Seventh Circle of Hell. This is the same group that was voted worst band of the ’90s by a Rolling Stone reader poll. And it wasn’t close. Rolling Stone’s quote about it was phenomenal: “It’s no surprise that Creed won this poll. It wasn’t even close. This is a band so hated that their own fans sued them after a famously bad show in Chicago in 2003.”

Jacobs claims the idea came about when he was sitting around with teammates and discussing how bands like Creed and Nickelback were popular when they were younger:

"“We were laughing with the raspy voices and how much we still kind of liked the songs. It just started turning into singing it randomly, you don’t even think about it. It’s taken on a life of its own.”"

Then Jacobs actually admitted to listening to Creed just last week.

As the Panthers approach this weekend’s NFC Championship Game, they are playing as well as they have at any point in franchise history. It’s clear Creedbombing has taken them higher. They’ve really embraced the trend with arms wide open. And with these awful references in this last paragraph I really can’t figure out how to end this post. You could say I’ve created my own prison.

…I’ll show myself out.
