The mountain of cash makes the 27-year-old Zimmerman the second highest-paid third baseman in all of baseball at $16.7 million per season, with only A-Rod making more. Sure seems like a lot of money for a guy who has finished with an OPS north of .800 just three times in which he’s played a full season.

On the bright side, more than a dozen of Zimmerman’s teammates showed up for his press conference. The moving gesture of unity suggests the Washington Nationals might finally be on the verge of forming a respectable team. Or at the very least finish above .500.
