Rio de Janeiro authorities have indicted U.S. swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen for false reporting of a crime, according to a report from ABC News. Lochte is back in the United States. Feigen isn’t so fortunate and is still in Brazil.

If found guilty, they’d face a fine but not prison time, according to police officials.

While the facts of the incident remain murky five days after it took place, it’s clear Brazilian authorities are taking things very seriously. Their willingness to seek criminal charges is a strong indication that a simple apology from the swimmers (as many have suggested) won’t suffice.

As of right now, the pendulum seems to be swinging toward full-scale international incident and away from cooler heads prevailing.
