Rickie Fowler Takes Fashion Risk With Jogging Pants and Moon Shoes

Rickie Fowler is looking to have a big year in 2016. It also appears he’s also trying to bring high tops to the golf course in a new way. The Twitter reaction to Fowler’s unique look during round one of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions was fairly mixed.

I’m not up on all of today’s fashion and personally I think the pants make the look a little ridiculous – the shoes are fine – so I reached out to our fashion guru Tim Ryan (@thesportshernia) for his thoughts on the look.

"“The bottom portion of the shoe is sleek and stylish. Something avid golfers should follow suit on, especially since so many of them – young and old – still insist on wearing what look like saddle shoes. But alas, the top half of the shoe makes it look like poor Rickie is on house arrest. A classic win-lose situation here.” “This could also be golf’s first experience of what basically equates to skinny jeans in golf pants form. I can’t imagine Hootie Johnson and friends are pleased with this look.”"

So there you have it, the shoes are fine, but the way the pants fit on the ankle is not.

The guys over at GolfPunk were also intrigued by the look, so they reached out to Puma for an explanation. Here’s what Grant Knudson, Head of Footwear at PUMA Golf had to say:

"“Each season we work closely with Rickie throughout the apparel and footwear development and design process to ensure we’re pushing the limits when it comes to both performance and style. “During a recent meeting, Rickie expressed interest in wearing a high-top cleated shoe that could be worn with more progressive apparel (joggers style pants). Our design team took inspiration from a prior Puma high-top lifestyle shoe and combined it with the Titan Tour Ignite outsole. “The result is a stylish, cleated performance high-top that includes a lace + Velcro closure. The apparel team then matched this with a version of our Six Pocket Pant that has been custom tailored to a jogger silhouette.”"

I highly doubt Rickie shows up to Augusta wearing those pants, but you never know.
