Remembrances of Jose Fernandez are Flooding Twitter

The sports world awoke this morning to the news that Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had died in a boating accident in Miami.

So remembrances of Fernandez are flooding the internet, as fans, media, friends and fellow ballplayers remember Fernandez’s immense talent, courage and charisma.

Fernandez risked he life to flee Cuba for the United States. Four times as a teenager he tried to leave Cuba. The first two times, he was arrested, the third time he didn’t quite make it. On the fourth try, a woman fell overboard and Fernandez dove into the ocean to save her. That person turned out to be his mother, Maritza.

Five days ago, Fernandez shared on Instagram that his girlfriend was pregnant.

Fernandez made his MLB debut April 7, 2013. A two-time All-Star, Fernandez had a career 2.58 ERA and a 38-17 record. He was 24.
