An Arlington, Texas, police officer fatally shot college football player Christian Taylor early Friday morning after the unarmed 19-year-old crashed a car through the window of a car dealership.

Officers were responding to a burglary call when they arrived at the scene to find Taylor’s car. Taylor, a sophomore cornerback at Angelo State University, was approached by an officer and a struggle ensued, according to a police statement.

The officer has been identified as 49-year-old Brad Miller, who has been on the force less than a year and had no prior law enforcement experience. He’s been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Taylor’s death in a time of heightened questions about police conduct and racial tensions sparked widespread discussion online. Taylor was black. The race of the officer is not known at this time.

Tennis star Serena Williams was among those to weigh in.

It’s unclear if there is any footage of the incident.
