Monica Puig Wins Puerto Rico's First Ever Gold Medal In Huge Upset

Monica Puig is currently ranked 34th on the women’s tennis tour, but right now she’s on top of the world. On Saturday, the 22-year-old beat the No. 2 player in the world, Angelique Kerber to win the women’s singles tennis gold medal at the 2016 Olympics. The victory gave Puerto Rico its first ever Olympic gold medal.

Puig won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second 4-6. She then took a 5-0 lead in the third and final set before Kerber fought back to win a game and make it 5-1. But Puig was able to close things out and take the win, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Puig’s best singles finish at a major tournament was reaching the fourth-round at Wimbledon in 2013. She reached the third-round of both the Australian Open and French Open this year. She has just one WTA title in her career, which came back in May of 2014 at the Internationaux de Strasbourg.

To call her win an upset is an enormous understatement.
