Mike McCarthy: Packers' Play Better Than Fail Mary Because "Our Guy Really Caught the Ball"

Richard Rodgers’ snag of Aaron Rodgers’ 61-yard desperation heave was a clear-cut catch, even by the current murky NFL guidelines. And it was clearly important to Mike McCarthy’s Green Bay Packers who were in jeopardy of dropping their fifth game out of six before the late heroics.

While Aaron Rodgers told reporters he’d never completed a Hail Mary prior to last night, his coach was quick to point out the Packers have been on the other side of some memorable faith-based completions in the past.

“I will just say this: At least our guy really caught the ball in this one,” McCarthy said after the game, referencing the so-called Fail Mary pulled off by Seattle at the Packers’ expense in 2012.

Whoa, coach. Hasn’t the league’s officiating been crushed enough this week without bringing up old wounds for the sake of tepid laughs?

The Rodgers-to-Rodgers connection gets a 10. McCarthy’s zinger, however, earns a generous 4.

The man who was granted the controversial catch in that game, Golden Tate, had a good seat for this one. So many connections. The past is complicated.

Green Bay was also victimized by Hakeem Nicks and the New York Giants before halftime of a 2011 playoff game.
