The Miami Marlins are still reeling from the tragic death of pitching phenom Jose Fernandez. The 24-year-old passed away early Sunday morning and the news rocked the sports world. On Monday, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria announced the franchise intended to retire Fernandez’s number.

I have ripped Loria and his organization for years, but this is one time I have to give him credit for doing the right thing. The impact Fernandez made on those around him and what he stood for are worthy of the highest praise.

No one will every wear No. 16 for the Marlins again, and that’s the way it should be.
