The New York Mets’ Matt Harvey situation has been the fly in the ointment of an otherwise delightful season. With the playoffs here and a matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers a few days away, all of that is behind them.

Just kidding.

Harvey, who is scheduled to pitch Game 3 of the National League Division Series in Flushing, skipped the team’s mandatory workout today.

General manager Sandy Alderson declined to comment until he learned the reason for the absence. He did say that Harvey was the only player not in attendance.

Manger Terry Collins shared a little more detail.

If Harvey pitches well, all of this will be water under a bridge. If he doesn’t, it will be magnified.

One thing is for sure: this would never happen to the city’s first Derek Jeter.
