Matt Flynn Signs with the Seattle Seahawks: Three Years, $26 Million, With $10 Million Guaranteed

First, the Green Bay Packers made the right call in not franchising Flynn. He would have been in line for a guaranteed 14 million if he had signed the tender immediately after being franchised, more than he got in guaranteed money. That amount would have been used in negotiations with other teams. With multiple purported bidders (Miami and Seattle) he still got less than that.
Two, the market was decent for Flynn, but not out of control. Five to six million is the going rate just to have a guy that can project as the starter (that’s about what Alex Smith signed for a one year deal before last season). Flynn’s deal is in line with Kolb, and reflects an opportunity to clearly supplant Tarvaris Jackson, but not a long term commitment that will hamstring the franchise if he fails.
Third, Seattle traded for Matt Hasselbeck eleven years ago to make him the starter as an unproven backup in Green Bay. Seattle can only hope that this deal works out as well, as Hasselbeck went on to start for a decade for the franchise.
