Martin Maldonado hit the cover off a baseball in Friday’s game between the Brewers and Pirates. With a runner on first in the 6th inning, Maldonado hit a ground ball to third baseman, Pedro Alvarez. Somewhere between Maldonado’s bat and Alvarez’s glove the cover peeled off the baseball. From there it was total confusion and amazement from players, umpires and both radio and television announcers – none of whom had ever seen the cover come off a baseball before. Maldonado is the second person I have ever seen do this. The first, of course, being Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez.
