The NBA season continues on Thursday night with two Western Conference teams doing battle as the Los Angeles Lakers travel to Oklahoma City to face the Thunder. OKC is 26-17 and in third place in the West, while the Lakers are 24-21 and half a game behind the Utah Jazz in the fight for the eighth seed.

The Lakers were hoping to get LeBron James back for this game, but their superstar is still not ready to return from a groin injury and will miss at least two more games. Los Angeles has been very inconsistent without James, and their last two games at home were proof. The Lakers looked terrible and lost to the worst team in the league, the Cleveland Cavaliers, before beating the Chicago Bulls thanks to a strong collective performance.
Consistency has also been a problem for their opponents, the Thunder, who have won just one of their last five games and seem to struggle a lot against bad teams. They still have the best defense in the league, however, and Paul George is an MVP candidate up to this point. Russell Westbrook has been slightly more inconsistent, and his points per game are at their lowest since his sophomore season. Regardless, he’s contributing in other ways, dishing out over 10 assists and rebounds per game for a triple-double. Together they’ll anchor the Thunder against the Lakers at home, where OKC is 14-6 this season and should be expected to beat a LeBron-less team.
But because it’s impossible to understand these two teams right now, we could see anything, from a blowout Thunder win to a close game, all the way to an upset by the Lakers. This is a fascinating matchup and should be lots of fun.
