Liverpool-Bayern Munich has kicked off at Anfield in a massive Champions League Round of 16 clash. The German outfit will attempt to turn around a sub-standard season while the EPL’s co-leaders deal look to regain their 2018 tournament form.

A fast start at Merseyside will be crucial to either side’s chances of landing a place in the last eight, and each team has at least one key absence to be concerned about ahead of the first leg.

Virgil van Dijk will miss Tuesday’s home fixture after he picked up a third group-stage caution in December’s 1-0 win over Napoli, while Joe Gomez is still out with a leg fracture and Dejan Lovren looks unlikely to feature.

But Bayern have a defensive blow of their own to contend with after Niko Kovac confirmed on Monday that a “stomach flu” had ruled star man Jerome Boateng out of the running.

This will be just the second season in which these two teams have met in UEFA competition, their only previous run-ins having come during the 1980-81 European Cup semi-finals. Liverpool triumphed on away goals that year after they managed to snatch a 1-1 draw in Munich before going on to beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the final.

Almost one year after Klopp’s side was beaten by Los Blancos in the last final, Liverpool will hope to advance again and retain their unbeaten status against Die Roten in competitive fixtures.

Niko Kovac will be without Boateng but should call upon Mats Hummels to come in and partner Niklas Sule at the back, which truthfully isn’t much of a downgrade. Winger Kingsley Coman is also fit, while Franck Ribery will be available after his wife gave birth to their new child.

Bayern—second in the Bundesliga—have won their last three games in a row but needed extra time to get the better of Hertha Berlin in the DFB-Pokal earlier this month. They were twice forced to come back from behind in their latest victory at Augsburg, where they squeaked out a 3-2 victory.

Liverpool is undefeated in five games but has won only three of their last seven. They’ll be relying on the effective triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to see them past any defensive concerns.

Liverpool made it all the way to last season’s Champions League final, but Klopp faces a German challenge that threatens to end this year’s campaign before they reach the last eight.
