The U.S. Open is quickly approaching and we’ve already seen a video of how treacherous the course is going to be. Guy Cipriano uploaded a video of a 118-yard putt on the first hole at Oakmont Country Club showing just how fast the fairways are, leaving us to believe that the greens will be even faster.

Now Jordan Spieth has weighed in on the course after a practice round.

"“There’s just so many other tough holes that par is going to be a fantastic score,” Spieth told reporters. “I’d sign for even par right now for 72 holes in June. Obviously given the history, but also having played it.” “Chambers Bay was a bit different because it’s a lot of drivers, and it’s wider fairways,” Spieth said. “And sure, you can get into a lot of trouble there, but out here, you’re going to have to curve the ball into these fairways to hold it in the right places, and you’ve got to take your medicine a lot more.”"

That’s right, the reigning U.S. Open champion said he would gladly take even par.

When we look back at some of the U.S. Open results at Oakmont, it’s clear to see why.

  • 2007 – Angel Cabrera won with a score of five over, one stroke ahead of second
  • 1994 – Ernie Els won in a playoff with a score of five under
  • 1983 – Larry Nelson won with a score of four under, one stroke ahead of second
  • 1973 – Johnny Miller won with a score of five under, one stroke ahead of second
  • 1962 – Jack Nicklaus won in a playoff with a score of one under
  • 1953 – Ben Hogan won with a score of five under, six strokes ahead of second

Spieth also said avoiding the sand will be a key component for whoever wins.

"“These bunkers here may as well be bunkers in the U.K. They may as well be pot bunkers,” he said. “You just kind of have to hit sideways out of them for the most part. So, they are very much hazards and you really don’t need a lot of drivers. I don’t think either of those points were of importance until playing it.”"

Bring on Oakmont!
