Speculation that Georgia had fired — or will immediately fire — defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt cropped up on Thursday morning. Mark Richt noticed and subsequently attempted to squash such conversation with this tweet.

This qualifies as an unconventional move. Then again things may be getting desperate in Athens. And desperate times call for desperate measures.

A vote of confidence is only as good as the person making such a vote. At 5-3 dark clouds have been to form around Richt. USA Today’s Dan Wolken paints a portrait of dysfunction in his latest piece, which includes the revelation Georgia’s athletic director wanted to fire Richt after last season but was overruled by the university president. Murmurs among “power brokers” close to the program have become louder.

All of this is taking place against a backdrop painted with a supremely easy schedule down the stretch. It’s likely the Bulldogs will finish 9-3 — which isn’t a terrible mark in the competitive SEC.

With so much unclear, here is something that is: a head coach confirming his defensive coordinator still has a job 48 hours before a game isn’t anything a team would want to make part of its weekly routine.
