The Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 Monday night, capped with a Jarrod Dyson backflip in center field following the final out. That victory, coupled with the Tigers loss to the Pirates in Pittsburgh means the Royals are now in first place atop the American League Central. Kansas City was four games under .500 on June 1 but have won eight straight in August to leapfrog struggling Detroit.

Making matters worse for the Tigers, Justin Verlander left Monday night’s start after the first inning and will have an MRI on his shoulder.

The Royals haven’t played in the postseason since winning the 1985 World Series. Kansas City and Detroit play six more times, all in September. Did somebody say, pennant race?
