It'd Probably Be Best for Paige and WWE to Part Ways at This Time

It has been a rough few months for former WWE women’s champion Paige. Back in June, she was detained by police in a bizarre incident in Las Vegas in which no charges were filed. In August, she was suspended for 30 days for a wellness violation, for what she says was missing a scheduled drug test.

Her boyfriend, Alberto Del Rio, was also suspended for a wellness violation, and has since negotiated his release from the company (and keeps changing his story after missing a scheduled appearance allegedly due to a knife-wielding attacker).

Their relationship has persisted, and is at a level of infatuation where she shares Instagram posts lamenting temporary separation from him:

This week, Paige was suspended for 60 days for a second wellness violation in as many months. Paige’s father, a former wrestler, alleged that her ongoing neck injury has been mistreated by WWE, and that she was suspended for taking prescribed painkillers.

Paige tweeted something similar: “Same shit different day. Kids..Please don’t get prescriptions or doctors notes. Not acceptable.” She added, “Rules apply depending on your status.”

After all this, WWE took what I think is an unprecedented step, releasing this statement to the New York Post: “Saraya-Jade Bevis tested positive for an illegal substance, not a prescription drug. In addition, WWE is providing world-class medical care for her in-ring injury.”

For what it’s worth, the WWE drug policy does not suspend performers for marijuana use. Paige’s response to TMZ questioning on whether she will stay with WWE basically amounted to, “I have a contract.”

Paige just turned 24 years old. If her neck heals, she has a long time remaining in her professional wrestling career. However, it does not seem as though her issues with WWE will get sorted out anytime soon. Right now, it feels like the best situation for her would be to get released, and come back in a few years when tensions are not as high. There will be a time where they need her to make a splash, and ideally by that time she’ll also have matured a bit more.
