In What World Is Greg Schiano Tennessee's Plan A and Mike Gundy the Emergency Backup Plan?

Tennessee’s pursuit of Greg Schiano ended in flames. There is now speculation they are attempting to lure Mike Gundy away from Oklahoma State.

A private plane is flying from Knoxville to Stillwater in a few hours. That could mean something or it could mean nothing.

But let’s entertain the idea that the Volunteers are targeting Gundy. That reality would open up all kinds of questions. The foremost: if Tennessee truly believed they had a chance at Gundy, why were they poised to go forward with Schiano? Gundy’s track record at Oklahoma State is so much more impressive than what Schiano did at Rutgers. Gundy also comes with considerably less baggage, and much better hair.

In what world is Gundy the backup plan? The only scenario that makes sense is one in which Tennessee is adding a few million dollars to its budget in the wake of this weekend’s fiasco. Perhaps they’re showing up with a big bag of $100 bills and pleading for a competent coach to save themselves from, well, themselves.

This feels like a desperate measure in clearly desperate times. And I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the mullet to climb ol’ Rocky Top. He’s been known to play the field but return back home for dinner. Tennessee is also potentially getting in a bidding war with T. Boone Pickens’ deep pockets.

Publicly whiffing on Gundy won’t be as embarrassing as the Schiano fiasco, so it’s worth a try. And hey, if somehow the Vols pull of a miracle here, they’ll have fallen upwards into the best hire yet.

Keep your eye on that plane.
