James Nicholas, a senior at Scarsdale High in New York, hit a remarkable shot out of a water hazard during the opening round of the New York State High School Championship.

On the 17th hole at Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, Nicholas hit his tee shot just short of the green, landing in a water hazard. With the choice of walking back 125 yards to the drop zone or playing the ball as it lay in the water, Nicholas chose the latter. The ball appears to be only halfway submerged, but that doesn’t make the shot any easier. Nicholas removed his shoes, rolled up his pants, and proceeded to hit a beautiful shot out of the water.

Unfortunately he was unable convert the putt for par, but he still won the 36-hole event by one stroke the following day.

As PGA.com pointed out the shot hit by Nicholas is similar to the one Bill Haas hit in the final round of the 2011 TOUR Championship, although Haas didn’t have to remove his shoes and had a much easier stance.
