Hey Bo Ryan, Quit Whining, Wisconsin's Basketball Graduation Rate is in the Toilet [UPDATE]

Bo Ryan was a sore loser Monday night after his Wisconsin Badgers lost to Duke in the National Championship, railing against the officials and then inexplicably boasting about how Wisconsin doesn’t “do rent-a-player.”

The truth is, Monday was Bo Ryan’s last real shot at National Championship. At 67-years old, this was definitely the best team he’s ever had. Between the National Player of the Year in Frank Kaminsky and a lottery pick in June with forward Sam Dekker, the loaded Badgers were just four minutes away from the National Title leading Duke 58-56.

Then Duke went on a 12-5 run to end the game, and Wisconsin’s dream season was over. The Badgers lose four seniors, but will be a Top 20 team all next year. A 3rd straight trip to the Final Four? It’s possible, but unlikely.

While Ryan ranted afterward, it’s surprising nobody brought up the Badgers’ awful graduation rates. Via the Boston Globe:

"They have the lowest Graduation Success Rate for black men of zero and the third-lowest overall at 40 percent. They were one of 16 teams that should be disqualified for historically graduating less than 50 percent of either black or white players or having an overall rate under 50 percent."

Coach Ryan, care to address that one?

[UPDATE: Bo Ryan touched on this in a press conference during the tournament. His argument is there’s a 6-year window to graduate per the NCAA, and because some of his players went overseas to play internationally and didn’t graduate in six years, Wisconsin is dinged by the NCAA.
