Greatest Seattle SuperSonics of All-Time

In their last season in Seattle, they went out in depressing fashion winning just 20 measly games. There’s no bigger sports-related drop kick to the nuts than what they’ve experienced and the way it all ended, but through the course of their existence the Sonics did have some pretty cool players, which brings me to this unofficial list of legends who once wore the Seattle green and yellow.

Jack Sikma — Known primarily for his dazzling perm and an ill-fated serial killer look in his later years, Sikma was actually a really good player. When I think of the Sonics, I usually think of Sikma and then promptly wonder what I would look like with his hair.

Detlef Schrempf — An merciless assassin on defense in NBA Jam. I always played with the Sonics and my friend Paul always used the Hornets hulking duo of Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. Paul was legitimately terrified of the work Computer Schrempf would do on defense while I had control of Kemp.

Shawn Kemp — Famous for making roughly $3,000 a season during a time in which the team opted to pay Jim McIlvaine roughly $235 million. Can anyone really blame the Manchild for eventually becoming unhinged? I will always point to McIlvaine when discussion of Kemp’s demise comes up.

Michael Cage — He also had a perm and his name couldn’t be more fitting for a power forward. Cage would later join the Cavs and switch to an atrocious haircut, which is perfectly fitting.

Dale Ellis & Ricky Pierce — Two memorable three-point assassins. Those early 90s Sonics teams were probably the funnest they ever had. And the unis were magnificent. Perhaps if they stuck with their original color scheme, fate would have been kinder.

Gary Payton — The Glove. One of the best if not the best to ever play for the franchise. His nickname is one of my favorites and his go-fuck-yourself attitude on the court was doubly awesome.

Frank Brickowski — Makes this list thanks to Dennis Rodman. I will never tire of this footage:

Xavier McDaniel — I was terrified of this dude but he proved to become one of my all-time favorites. If your name is Xavier McDaniel, you’re pretty much guaranteed to be successful at something. For Xavier, bright moments were found both on the court and on the big screen.

Tom Chambers — Spent five years with the Sonics before moving onto Phoenix to bone cougars with Dan Majerle. Best known for teabagging Mark Jackson. As a result of that famous dunk, he was awarded the ability to basically leap from the 3-point line and slam it home in the Sega game, Lakers vs. Celtics.

Sedale Threatt — Played for a ton of teams but I always remember Sedale as a member of the Sonics.

Eddie Johnson — Another fun scorer to watch. The 1991 Sonics were loaded. How that roster finished with a record of 41-41 will forever be a mystery.

Sam Perkins — A player who constantly looked as though he slept peacefully inside a giant bong was destined to play hoops in Seattle.

Nate McMillen — For someone I remember as being a key cog in those great Sonic teams his numbers don’t reflect it, though as we know, the eye test is just as important as a page of statistical information.

Robert Swift — Legend? I would say so. But on second thought, it feels wrong putting his name anywhere near the ones mentioned above.

Critical Note: Before you fill me with holes using the Contra Spread gun, Ray Allen was not forgotten, I just don’t associate him with the Sonics. He’s either a Buck or a Celtic… or Jesus Shuttlesworth in a threesome.
