Former Wisconsin Associate Athletic Director John Chadima Was Never Reprimanded For an Alcohol-Related Incident Involving the Wisconsin Starting Quarterback Fourteen Years Ago

It was not the first public incident involving John Chadima and alcohol. Back in March of 1998, Wisconsin starting quarterback Mike Samuel was arrested for drunk driving while driving Chadima’s vehicle, with Chadima in the passenger’s seat because he was too drunk to drive. (Samuel was the starting quarterback on the 1998 Rose Bowl team with Ron Dayne that beat UCLA).

At the time, it was thought that Chadima had received a written reprimand in his file from then-Athletic Director Pat Richter for the incident. Turns out, Wisconsin does not have any record of a reprimand.

"Amy Toburen, UW’s director of communications, also confirmed university officials could not locate a record on file of a written reprimand for a 1998 incident in which then-UW quarterback Mike Samuel was arrested for driving drunk in Chadima’s pickup truck."

Chadima was identified as the UW Athletic Department Facilities manager at the time. Instead, he rose through the ranks to Associate Athletic Director under Ricther and Barry Alvarez, who was the head coach when the 1998 incident occurred.

Also from that Badger Herald story linked above are details of texts sent by Chadima, where he threatened a student employee with ““get ur Ass up here,” and “you are fired. sending you home on a greyhound tomorrow.” Chadima’s hotel room party at the Rose Bowl also resulted in $1,100 worth of damage.

Barry Alvarez also made some interesting statements, saying this was not an underage drinking party.

"“This is their camaraderie. They have every right to get together at a function,” Alvarez said. “Now at this particular one there may have been — which I don’t agree with, which I would never accept — student managers there.”"

Chadima had engaged in a little too much “camaraderie” and it sounds like it has been going on for a while, and it did not affect his career at Wisconsin until now.
