Treon Harris and Antonio Callaway will miss spring football for the Florida Gators for undisclosed reasons. Head coach Jim McElwain announced that both players hadn’t been with the team since January but wouldn’t discuss why or whether they will eventually return to the team.

McElwain said the two have been “doing schoolwork” and “they won’t be with us during the spring. That’ll be the last we’ll talk about on that front.”

He would not say if the players were suspended, instead repeating himself, “They haven’t been here and that’ll be the last we’ll talk about it.”

Harris, a junior-to-be, took over at quarterback when starter Will Grier was suspended for violating the NCAA’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Florida went 4-4 with Harris at the helm and the offense was an absolute mess. He completed just 47.2 percent of his passes in the team’s final six games, with four touchdowns and six interceptions in that span.

Grier is currently in the process of transferring and Harris may have been moving to receiver or cornerback anyway. That opens the door for redshirt junior transfer Luke Del Rio and incoming freshman Feleipe Franks to nab the starting role.

The loss of Callaway may wind up being a bigger blow to Florida. He’s a dynamic playmaker at wide receiver and had 35 catches for a team-high 678 yards in 2015.
