Dick LeBeau, who has been the defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 11 years, has resigned. LeBeau, the defensive wizard who helped the Steelers to two Super Bowl victories, told the Urbana Citizen that it’s a “mutual parting” and the 77-year old is not retiring.

LeBeau has had a peerless career as a player (Hall of Fame cornerback) and coach (as defensive coordinator in Cincinnati, the Bengals went to two Super Bowls), and it’ll be interesting to see if he lands with another team.

The Steelers haven’t been a strong defensive team in a few years, and many will point to their last two playoff losses – the inability to beat Joe Flacco at home, and then Tim Tebow on the road – as a reason to make a move. But it’s not as if the Steelers have drafted well defensively, or even hit on the right free agents.

This reeks of “gotta find a fall guy because we haven’t won a playoff game in four seasons.”
