Deion Branch was signed by the Colts Monday afternoon … only five days before Indianapolis travels to New England to play the Patriots in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. (Cue the dramatic music.)

Colts owner Jim Irsay even tweeted the link to the team’s website announcing the move. (Cue even more dramatic music!)

Cleary — clearly — the Colts are trying to get in on this whole “trolling” fad and signed Branch to stick it to Bill Belichick and the Patriots. There’s no other answer.

Oh wait.

Yes, it makes for some fun headlines and adds a wrinkle to Saturday night’s game considering Branch won a Super Bowl MVP with the Patriots. That was a decade ago. Branch didn’t catch a pass for anybody in 2013. It’s hard to believe adding a veteran wide receiver is going to be able to give key secrets away about how to attack the Patriots.

But that’s a lot less fun, isn’t it?
