There were plenty of storylines coming into the final round of the 2016 Masters. From Jordan Spieth’s attempt to go wire-to-wire in back-to-back Masters to Bernhard Langer attempting to become the oldest golfer to ever win a major championship. As it so often happens, none of those lines would come to fruition, but a new one did emerge.

Jordan Spieth appeared to be cruising to his second straight Masters victory in as many years, until he hit the back nine. Spieth arrived at the 10th hole with a five-stroke lead; he made bogey on the 10th, bogey on the 11th, and a quadruple bogey seven on the par-3 12th and dropped back to one-under.

Instead, Danny Willett emerged from the smoke after Spieth’s implosion. Willett was five strokes back at the start of the day and carded a final round five-under. Willett was close to not even playing in this year’s Masters tournament. His first child was due to arrive on this very Sunday, but his wife Nicole ended up having a C-section a couple of weeks early.

"Via SkySports: “People are very small-minded to think that a golf tournament is bigger than the birth of your first child,” said the Ryder Cup hopeful, who collected his fourth European Tour title at the Dubai Desert Classic last month. "

The Englishman held his composure on the 17th and 18th and his closest competitor, Dustin Johnson, was unable to catch him. Willett became only the second Englishman to win the Masters; joining Nick Faldo who won it in 1989, 1990, and 1996.

Danny Willett, who had 20-1 odds entering Sunday, is your 2016 Masters champion.
