College Football Recap Week Seven: Give Lane Kiffin His Due

Personal bias: Lane Kiffin may embody pure evil, but the guy can run an offense. Six hundred total yards and six touchdowns in their first seven possessions against Top 25 Sagarin team Cal. USC is 5-2 against the #19 Sagarin ranked schedule. The two losses came by a combined three points against a frisky Washington team and away against a beloved, well-rated Stanford. Twenty-nine voters leaving them off their ballot entirely is ludicrous.

Heisman culling: It was a rough week to be a high-profile quarterback. Ryan Mallett left the Auburn game with a concussion. Denard Robinson hurt himself and watched Tate Forcier lift the team to a near comeback against Iowa. Taylor Martinez was benched during a loss to Texas. Terrelle Pryor was underwhelming at best against Wisconsin’s pressure. The duel is down to Cam Newton and Kellen Moore. One is significantly more likely to keep his team undefeated.

Flawed logic: South Carolina upset No. 1 Alabama. To some, this meant they should automatically be ranked higher. Voters disagreed and this weekend justified it. If anything, South Carolina received too much credit for beating Alabama. It was a great win, but the Gamecocks have not had a great comprehensive season. Viewing their track record, they could easily slip up against a solid Kentucky team. Spurrier, himself, pointed that out. The only people shocked were those juiced up on head to head hysteria from the week before.

Failure: Florida’s offense is brutal. Blame Steve Addazio. Alabama held them to two field goals and under 300 yards. LSU allowed them only 243 yards. Mississippi State led 10-0 at halftime and ran one passing play during the entire second half. They were that confident Florida would not outscore them. Tim Tebow graduated. Black Tebow left the program. O quam cito transit gloria mundi. Adjust to your personnel.
