Chris Kluwe was released by the Minnesota Viking in 2013. In January the former punter penned an explosive column on Deadspin attributing his release to the bigotry of the Vikings’ staff, in particular special teams coach Mike Priefer whom he accused of making homophobic remarks. Kluwe is one of the sport’s world most vocal supporter of same-sex marriage and felt it played a strong role in why he was cut.

On Thursday new Viking coach Mike Zimmer announced Priefer — whom the team is currently investigating after Kluwe’s allegations — would be retained from the staff of Leslie Frazier. This news didn’t sit well with Kluwe and his legal team, who threatened legal action during an interview with St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Kluwe’s lawyer,  Clayton Halunen didn’t mince words:

"“My one word description is ‘outrageous,’ ” Halunen said in an interview with the Pioneer Press. “It’s almost unimaginable that there’s a pending investigation regarding whether or not this guy engaged in homophobic, hate-filled behavior and without even a conclusion in the findings they’ve retained this person as a coach, as a leader.” “It’s unbelievable to us,” Halunen said. “It shows that the Vikings are not sincere about this supposed investigation, that it’s a mere charade, and at the end of the day they’re going to cover up this.”"

Halunen said it’s only a matter of time before they pursue legal action against the team. Kluwe declined comment until the investigation is concluded which could take until March.

Something else to consider :

"A source close to the situation said Thursday’s announcement of Zimmer’s staff does not necessarily mean Priefer will be with the team in 2014. The source said Priefer already was under contract for next season, and that the team could re-evaluate his situation after the investigation is completed."

Kluwe didn’t play during the 2013 season after being cut in summer by the Raiders.
