Carlos Gomez Designated For Assignment By Houston Astros

Carlos Gomez is done with the Houston Astros. The two-time All-Star has been designated for assignment by the ‘Stros after they traded for him just one year ago at the trade deadline.

Gomez was seen by many as a rising superstar as recently as two years ago, but in 2016 he has struggled mightily this season. So far this season he is hitting just .210, with five home runs, 29 RBIs and a woeful .594 OPS. The 30-year-old has struck out 100 times in 85 games and 295 at-bats, while posting an awful fWAR of -0.4.

The Astros gave up a ton to get Gomez last summer. They shipped top prospect Brett Phillips, plus Domingo Santana, Josh Hader and Adrian Houser to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for the center fielder. Given that Gomez is now done in Houston, it’s clear the team lost that trade badly.

Gomez is making $9 million this year and was set to be a free agent following the season. We’re sure he’ll get another shot somewhere and a contender could always attempt to add him for a stretch run. But it’s clear he’s not the same player who posted a 7.4 fWAR for the Brewers in 2013 and 5.7 in 2014.
