Bryan Colangelo met with the media on Sunday after officially being named the Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations. Colangelo will replace Sam Hinkie, the team’s much-maligned former general manger who resigned on Wednesday.

Colangelo joins the organization after his father, Jerry, was named as a special advisor to managing general partner Josh Harris. The younger Colangelo has twice been named NBA Executive of the Year, once with the Toronto Raptors and once with the Phoenix Suns.

Bryan Colangelo told members of the media on Sunday that he considered the last three seasons – dubbed “The Process” by Hinkie – to have been a “measured rebuilding process.” He further stated that he saw his impending tenure as a “moving forward of everything that is in place.”

Colangelo also surprised many in attendance by claiming that when negotiating for the position, he always believed that Hinkie would be a part of the organization. He claims to be “disappointed” the two will not be working together.

The 50-year-old Colangelo has quite a daunting task ahead of him. While the Sixers have stockpiled draft picks and young assets over the past few years, they have also been horrific on the court. This season has been no better, as Philadelphia currently has the NBA’s worst record at 10-69. That follows up a combined record of 37-127 over the past two seasons.

It won’t be easy to turn things around, but Philadelphia now has one of basketball’s best executives on the job.
