Brent Musburger has signed a multi-year extension with ESPN, the network announced Thursday morning. He’ll retain his role as SEC Network’s No. 1 play-by-play man, working alongside Jesse Palmer.

Musburger, 77, shows no signs of slowing down but this news is another indicator that his days of calling marquee games — outside of The Rose Bowl — on ABC/ESPN or another network are likely behind him.

The legendary broadcaster was the first person to ever speak on the SEC Network and maintaining that relationship was clearly something ESPN valued. Selfishly, there are many college football fans who miss his voice as the soundtrack to the biggest matchups on fall Saturdays.

If there were ever a time to change his role, this offeseason would have been it. With Brad Nessler headed to CBS and Sean McDonough moving to Monday Night Football, there ample spots for Musburger to fill with more visibility.

Hopefully he’ll get the chance to do a College Football Playoff game at some point — although, in words he’d endorse — don’t bet on it.
