Brandon Marshall on Cullen Jenkins: "There is not enough money on this Earth for somebody to disrespect my wife"

Nasty things are said during every NFL game in the hopes of throwing an opponent off his game. That’s not breaking news. But apparently talking trash about a player’s wife is frowned upon — at least in Brandon Marshall’s case.

The New York Jets receiver did not like New York Giants defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins making a comment about his wife just before halftime of yesterday’s city championship.

Jenkins made a comment referencing Marshall’s “girl,” not knowing — or really, perhaps knowing — that the wideout is married. This led to a confrontation and Jenkins reportedly apologized during the two-minute warning.

"“I believe in trash talk and some guys get up for that, but some things are off limits,” Marshall said. “He made a comment — he said my ‘girl’ — and he didn’t know I was married. “I don’t care. There’s not enough money on this earth for someone to disrespect my wife. I just tried to take it out in between the lines. I don’t care about anything at that point.”"

Marshall said there’s no lingering bad blood because Jenkins apologized.

"“He thought maybe I had four or five girls or something,” Marshall said. “But I’m happily married to one woman. I love my wife, Michi Marshall, and I will fight to the end for her. “So there you go, baby. He’s 500 pounds [305 pounds, actually], and I went after him for you.”"

This is all a bit surprising if you were under the assumption on-field trash talk was worse than an average online Madden game with headsets. It’s also an important lesson for all the married men out there to never pass up an opportunity to score brownie points with the wife.

Future trash-talkers should think twice about employing a similar strategy. Although the comments had an effect on Marshall, it was far more positive than negative (12 catches for 131 yards, including the game-tying touchdown).
