Art Briles may not be fired, yet. Chip Brown is reporting there is a movement among Baylor regents, backed by big-money donors, to keep Briles and reduce his punishment to a one-year suspension. Members of that set lump the blame for the horrific handling of sexual assault claims on deposed president Ken Starr.

"There are those among the Baylor leadership who feel the major failings of the BU rape scandal fall on former president Ken Starr for the school not having a Title IX coordinator from 2011-2014, sources said. If BU had a Title IX coordinator, the football coaching staff would have had training on how to handle any complaints of rape made against football players, sources said."

Brown was uncertain whether there are enough votes to keep Briles, or whether he would accept sitting out a year. His buyout, per Brown, would be between $15 million and $25 million of the $40 million left on his contract.

This serves a reminder. When your coach is a proven winner, that Kool-aid is potent stuff.

UPDATE: USA Today’s Dan Wolken confirmed said faction among the Baylor community exists but it is “few in number” and the moment is “unlikely to result in any action.”
