Twas fun while it lasted…

Coming into today’s start, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke had not allowed a single run for 43.2 straight innings. The MLB record-holder of this impressive statistic is Orel Hershiser, who once pitched 59 consecutive innings without allowing an opposing player to cross home plate.

Well, for Greinke (with Hershiser in the booth commentating the game for Time Warner Cable SportsNet LA) — the streak ended today at 45.2 against the New York Mets.

Of all teams to break the streak … the Mets. Yes, the same feeble New York Mets who, this weekend, became the second team since 1920 to start 4/5 hitters with batting averages under .180.

In the most Mets way ever, they manufactured the run via the following sequence:

  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit by pitch
  • Kevin Plawecki single
  • Nieuwenhuis advances to third on Joc Pederson error
  • Nieuwenhuis scores on fielder’s choice to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Confirming, once again: Baseball is weird.
